I think we're doing all right... (the economy)

Post by wecsoger »

Debated about sticking this over in Politics since I suspect that's where comments are headed...

Just some casual observations from contemplating on the motorcycle ride home

I work for a large trucking company. Won't share name here, but we have a hundred some facilities across the U.S., main business specializing in LTL (less-than-load) freight.

Last six months have been like that dry desert riverbed turns into raging torrent

Weekly my department is getting equipment requests for new-hires. New Customer Service clerk here, New Dispatcher there.

Just today, had two different work orders for two locations adding a body.

Got a facility north-ish CA, talked to the terminal manager there - said he's gone from 12 to 25 drivers in less than two years. And I needed to send him some more gear.

I have been traveling, have a facility in north MI (middle of nowhere!). Was there about a month ago and they were hustling. No room on the dock.

Have facilities on both top corners of OH, was there last week. Freight everywhere, forget about getting on dock to work until afternoon when all the pickup/delivery drivers are loaded and out of there.

At company HQ, I can think of easily ten new hires just this week I've dealt with getting set up.

So saying, we're begging for drivers, and mechanics, and dock workers.

It appears to me that us folks in fly-over country are gettin' things done and we're moving the economy along.

I travel all over central Pennsylvania working for the Department of Health, and there are "Hiring" signs EVERYWHERE. Heard one of the guys running for Governor talking last week and he said all the businesses he has talked to are looking for people but, they vant find people who van pass the drug test, or are willing to work. Wages are up in the nursing homes.

Automotive manufacturing plants are big in our area with $20 to $30 an hour trained and skilled jobs and many small sized vendors and contractors needed to support the larger assembly lines, paying $11 to $16 an hour for non-skilled workers. Passing the initial drug screening seems to be the difficulty here but they don't often test after hiring unless there is a workplace injury.....The sista girls often have apps on their phones that track their earnings and warns them when to quit so as to not to interfere with or disqualify them of their monthly welfare and foodstamp benefits.....

Where I work, we usually have a summer slowdown and our budget is cut each and every Summer. Despite the budget cuts, our volume has not decreased. There is a tab on the computer moniter which can be clicked to see prescriptions entered, prescriptions filled, and prescriptions sold. The numbers in most stores are the same as most other times of the year other than flu season. People are buying their medicines. In the last several years, many people were not buying their medicines during the Summer.

Jobs are out there. My distributors say it is hard to find someone who will show up on time and pass the pee test.In fact one said he stopped doing the pee test. Talked to one guy who would meet the new hire at the shop so he could ride with him to the job site. By the third day of being late he just left without him. So he didn't even make it a week.

When my company is buying new equipment they are getting more automation added. Just can't find people to run the equipment so we are eliminating stages, so one machine does multiple functions. So if you want to recommend a choice of schooling for someone. Industrial Automation tech, robotics is just going to be more common as labor is hard to find. Someone has to keep it running and a two year tech school degree is all that is needed.

I think the economy is doing fine. I wonder how long the stock market can run without a major correction, but things seem to be going well.

If I were a suspicious type ( which I am, as an abuse investigator in nursing homes) I would be fearful of Big dollar, liberal types trying to do something to slow the economy soon, oh like before the first week in November, maybe. But that is just paranoid thinking, maybe.

Yep.
But, I've noticed that all the "bombshells" that have dropped this year, truthful or not, haven't budged Wallstreet all that much. Big Dollars don't seem to be worried about 'Crat BS too much.

Great! It's been 2 years and four weeks since I shut my forklift off for the last time and it's really nice to see you guys working and paying into social security so I can get my monthly check.

What I see as sad is mainstream media downplaying everything.......I hope people wake up and realize the lies they perpetrate so no Democrat wins for the next fifty years or until I'm 114 ...whichever comes first.
