Scope moisture

Post by Pitchy »

Wife has a cheap Gamo scope that came on a air rifle, she left it sit outside and it got moisture inside of it.
I`ve set it out in the sun for a week and tried a hair drier and it only gets worse.
I can`t get the lenses out they must of glues them in, what`s the solution other than throwing it away.

Could you try leaving it in an oven on about 200 to 250 degrees for 12 hours then just turn the oven off? Leave the scope in there until all is cool enough to handle without any mitts or padding. That should help.

Right...if the moisture got in....it got in from somewhere. Try Pillers advice and after the moisture is out, sight it in then tape up the glass and coat the whole thing with Flex rubberized coating spray...hey, you nothing to lose.

I have this little 4 x 6 yard wagon and the tires are a million years old....maybe 30......half the rubber fell off and the rest is dry rotted badly. I sprayed these tires real good with Flex spray,, pumped in 10-15 pounds of air pressure and they are good to go.-----6

Those Gamo scopes leave a lot to be desired. If you'd like a cheap scope to replace it with that's reliable and tough enough for air rifles (assuming it came on a Gamo spring powered rifle) give a look at the UTG Leapers scopes. I've got four of them on various rifles (air rifles) and am pleased with the results. They range in price from a fixed power 4X up to over $300, my favorite is their 3-12X44 compact scope with etched glass reticle.

Let us know if baking it does the trick or not.

If it's not a scope designed for air rifles even an expensive Leopold will fail in a short time. Springer air rifles put any scope to the test because of the rapid recoil acceleration and deceleration involved. It's a short but hard recoil cycle that does them in.

I’ll second the rice idea. I keep silica gel packets around for my dehydrated food storage and would try that. To re-dry the packets I follow piller’s advice on the warm oven.
Kind regards,

Rice works, buddy of mine had his video camera slide off boat seat into water that leaked in thru rivets, ( we retired that boat). Anyhow he put the rice in a bowl with the camera and it spent a couple days on the drying rack over the woodstove. Being July we were only burning garbage so not much heat. The camera worked like normal.
I wonder if a vacuum packer could be employed to pull moisture out of the scope. Obviously if the scope was gas filled, the gas is already gone since it already has condensation.
I suppose you could stand it in direct sun and might accomplish heating enough to dry it...

Here's an even cheaper scope that several on the forums give good marks for.

Hammers 3-9X32 - for when you get tired of messing with the Gamo and are looking for a good, cheap replacement. :D

I'm still curious about the baking experiment. :)

Lenn,

They are on the way. Supposed to be there Monday.

Give those black birds a working over! I've been sniping at the crows around here. Hate those things!

Thanks Jason will post when they arrive. :)

Gamo scope just came out of the oven at 200 degrees for nine hours and it seems to have dried up but its not as clear as it was.
I suppose the water left a film on the lenses and it may get moisture in it again if the thing isn`t sealed.
