We've had a few Spitfire threads. Here's an entire movie. Sort of tough to watch in a few places. Great story. Great men.

I always like to put in a plug for The Eagle Squadrons: American pilots that wanted to kill Nazis but the Army Airforce was not doing so at the time so they went to England.

I for one am bloody glad they did, we can never repay their sacrifice or the sacrifice of all those who came to our aid.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

And, you guys carried the water until FDR and friends got their thumbs out of their bums and then waited and waited to open the western front. So, thank YOU.gamekeeper wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 1:15 pmI for one am bloody glad they did, we can never repay their sacrifice or the sacrifice of all those who came to our aid.

Re: "First Light" True Story Of RAF 92nd Squadron
BTT, as I watched it the other night and really enjoyed it.
The air combat scenes were borrowed from the excellent 1969 movie "The Battle of Britain" but updated with CGI and color enhancements, from what I read. They used a real Spit for some scenes of a single plane, and a non-flying replica for ground scenes, and the young actor/pilot was filmed in the back seat of a 2-seater fighter (a Russian Yak) which had its cockpit modified to look just like a real Spit.
As my dad served on an RAF base and crewed Spitfires with the Eagle Squadrons, I really enjoyed the period look and feel of the base, the ready room, uniforms and equipment and all that; and it provided me with a better understanding of where/how he lived for 4.5 years -- although he wasn't a flight officer.
It was really interesting to see how the author of the memoir on which the movie was based still seemed to have "survivor's guilt" 75+ years later.
I was waiting to see a scene of the British pilots pee'ing on the tail wheels for good luck -- which my dad said they did all the time -- but they left that detail out...
