Having one of those days- THIS WEEK!

Post by GunnyMack »

A couple guys in the F&G club were asking me about fly tying benches. Sure I'll make them just find me plans, that was 5 months ago.
I found a basic set on line so I made a prototype from pine. As the finish was drying I started to see changes that needed to be done.
Version 2 now has handles and removable spool pins, a removable tablet/ book stand.
The local fly shop has been test driving both versions for past 2 weeks and we think we have every bug worked out...
I started version 3 this past Monday. This one in walnut...
This walnut has been fighting me at every turn! Base decided it wanted to warp after I spent hours planeing bu hand to flatten it.
Then it seems every time I turn around I've screwed up something else. Been chasing my tail on this one!
Anyhow, here is version 2.

I think I was 13 or 14. My one foray into flies/bugs/streamers was a very small vise that held a very small C-Clamp that held the hooks. Nothing very small and mostly fugly. Mostly yarn, deer hair and parakeet feathers. I did catch lots of small bass and bluegills, though...

Looks real good to me. I raised our first grandson with a fly rod in his hands. As he got older he wanted to tie some flies so we started picking up a few supplies. Got a tying vice from some outfit. He decided he needed a table and wanted me to build it. got a set of plans and built it. I thought him all I could remember from tying with my dad. He did make some really fine flies. We did catch a lot of fish with his work. I still have the table and all the stuff with it, but my old eyes and fingers just can't do it now.

I would have settled for the first version if it is even half as good as version two...!

Nice work.

This reminds me that on our last move, I found my dad's home made fly tying kit, complete with 4 boxes of his bass and trout flies.
I have not tied flies since a teenager and have not fly fished in 20 years. Maybe I should go fishing and use his old flies.
