N.E. US of A - travel tips, anyone?

Post by AmBraCol »

We'll be heading up to the US of A later this year. First stop will be to spend a few days with the Staff Sergeant who's currently billeted onboard a naval base up in New England. He's got free time scheduled for the period we'll be up there and we've got one trip (to Niagara Falls) already scheduled. But there are some gaping holes in my US "Visited States Map" and I'm hoping to fill them in. Delaware, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are all on that list. What are "must visit" places to see up in that neck of the woods? I'm sure we'll be doing Concord, Lexington and other such points, but don't know at this point how we'd be routing our travels. For what it's worth, we'll be based in Rhode Island.

I'm based in RI, Paul, and made a nice vacation loop from here to Niagara Falls, stopping along the way at the Springfield Armory Museum (Western Mass), the Baseball Hall of Fame (Cooperstown, NY) and the Remington Museum (Ilion, NY); then driving around Lake Ontario, re-entering the US over the Thousand Islands bridge in upper NYS.

From there I went cross country (East) to Lake George (Fort Ticonderoga & Fort William Henry), then into (scenic) Vermont & New Hampshire.

Your RI contacts should be able to hook you up with some Striped Bass fishing on Narragansett Bay (shore or boat); and (depending on your timeline) there's the Newport Jazz Festival in early August (3rd-5th).

In the Boston area, besides Concord/Lexington, I would recommend a visit to the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) in Boston Harbor.

In any event, we hope you have an excellent trip !

You could spend your summer up here and thoroughly enjoy it!

If you like American History and Americana, the Shelburne Museum in
Shelburne, VT is definitely worth a trip. The admission fee is good for 2 days.
There's a reason for that......

Vermont Marble Museum in Proctor, VT.

Simon Pearce glassblowing in Quechee, VT.

Fisk Quarry Preserve on Isle La Motte in Lake Champlain. Loads
of fossils in a 480 Million year old coral reef.

The aforementioned Kittery Trading Post. I think it's still the largest
gun dealer on the East Coast.

Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine.

Owl's Head Transportation Museum in Owl's Head, Maine. Old airplanes,
cars, and motorbikes.

Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. Very interesting old fort.
The observatory in the western tower of the bridge is the highest public bridge observatory in
the free world. The views are spectacular.

Quoddy Head State Park. Easternmost lighthouse in the US. Small museum and
spectacular hiking trails along the ocean side cliffs. West Quoddy Head is on
the Canadian side. Some of the highest tides in the world around here - over
a 20' difference between high and low tide!

Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, CT.

Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA. Largest private collection of warships in the
world. PT boats, USS Massachusetts, USSLionfish, and so forth.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is also worth a stop.

That's 2 weeks of activities right there! Fall River, Boston, and Groton are the closest
2 things on the above list to RI.

Enjoy the trip! :D

FIRST TIP: DON'T CARRY A GUN IN NEW ENGLAND. Then when you get to Maine stop at the L.L.Bean store.

Awesome list of tips Stretch. We've been talking about a couple weeks up there next year after I retire. Perfect for museum geeks like us.

The USS Albacore Museum (http://www.ussalbacore.org/) is in Portsmouth, NH, right off I-95. This boat was a testbed for many of the innovations used in the nuke boats. Pretty impressive, self guided, walk through tour and a film about how they got the boat into it's present, drydock, location.

I second the Shelburne Museum(https://shelburnemuseum.org/) as another extremely interesting spot to visit. In addition to it having a huge collection of early Americana it also has a drydocked ship, this one, the SS Ticonderoga (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ticonderoga_(steamboat)) a sidewheel passenger/cargo ship which plied Lake Champlain in the first half of the 20th century until it was moved several miles overland to the present location in the museum.

No tips from me... but, when I went up there, I made sure to visit "Old Ironsides"... (the ship...) :P Now, I studiously avoid the entire NE.

In response to TWHBC, Jeff's Maine Seafood in St. Albans, VT., has what is likely the VERY BEST
seafood chowder/stew in the known universe.

J.R. Maxwell's in Bath has an item on the dinner menu called "Bacon-n-Blue Haddock."
Haddock wrapped in bacon and smothered with bleu cheese! Yes, it's loaded with cholesterol
and has enough calories in it to have fed von Paulus' Sixth Army at Stalingrad for a winter, but it's
SO GOOD!!!

Wow, guys! Thanks for all the tips. We're still a couple months out from the trip so have time to decide final plans. So far the only thing "in concrete" is the trip to Niagara.

So, what is there "must see" in Delaware? I'm trying to figure out a way to fill in that gap in my travel map and a good reason to do so. I also need to check with the wife on what SHE wants to see along the way. One week in the area doesn't leave much extra time, to say the least.

The White Mountains in NH are awful pretty and I think Mystic Seaport in CT is awesome but I'm a wood boat nerd.

I'll say - yer gonna need to take some speed, Paul..... ;)

The round trip from RI to Niagara Falls & back, by itself, is a little over 1200 miles.

I did it ONCE, on a Honda 250 Scrambler, a loooooong time ago......

Glutton for punishment, eh?

Yep, been talking with the better half and Delaware's out. Of course I KNEW that, just didn't want to admit that one week isn't enough to cram it all in. The trip to Niagara will be over a weekend. We'll have four drivers if need be and already have lodging booked. The rest will fall into place. We've got almost two months left to plan in, change our minds and discover things to see we'd not thought of. There's WAY too much to see in too little time, we'll be dragging by the end of our stay there. Then it'll be on to familiar territory as we visit family, friends and supporters west of the Mississippi. At that point I should be able to get in some levergun time as well!

We stopped by yesterday on the way to the Twain museum. The museum in Groton was not open yesterday for some reason or other. It's great to see the "kid" again, he and his wife are doing great, their dog loves us and we've survived in Yankee Land for 36 hours so far with no ill effects.  The weather's not been cooperating very well, but the company in the car's been great. This week will go by way too fast.

NE trip went well, for the past couple weeks have been doing a lot of travel west of the Mississippi, as usual. 13 states, over 6,000 miles so far. But chances to do things between work related engagements. Have visited several gunshops along the way. Resisted urges for the most part, traveling up here is expensive! Have seen some nice leverguns, but prices aren't so friendly.
