Hmm, Gunsmoke

Post by GunnyMack »

So I'm waiting for stain to dry on my latest project. Came in for lunch and flipped on the tv.
Gunsmoke is! Episode is titled 'The Fourth Victim'
Looks like they have a 94 takedown with a suppressor!
This is Hollywood after all- the gun is completely quiet...

A silent 94, that's an episode I haven't seen

I just watched it, I believe its a 92 (full screen and stop motion), but yeah, they overdid the capability of the silencer.

Around 1900, it wasn't unusual for a person to order a rifle threaded for a suppressor. I've seen many old lever gun ads for Marlins and Winchesters threaded for suppressor use. I don't know if that was very common around the era 'Gunsmoke' was supposed to be set in, but I'm sure back then, just like now, there were hobbyist as well as professionals or assassins, that were interested in 'cutting edge' firearms technology.

Marshall Dillon got a bullet that Doc took fromone of the victim's and said it's a 30 call rifle bullet- that's why I said a 94...

The muzzle wasn't threaded, more of a push & turn.

In my younger/stupid/ collecting days I could have had an 1886 in 33 w.c.f. that was a honest 90% gun for half of what a beater 10% er cost because the barrel was threaded for a Maxim silencer. I've seen more than a few old guns threaded for the Maxim.---6

I am no Sixgun, but who is, really, and I have seen several old Winchesters and Marlins threaded for suppressor. I believe they were often for the traveling outdoors man, as a majority of the ones I have seen were takedown configuration. I have heard that it was common for outdoorsman to travel by train to a. hunting location by train and the takedown was preferred for this type of traveling.
Of course I have several leverguns threaded for suppressors, but I have had that done after purchase. Still loving on my 1895 shorty,45-70 ,takedown with suppressor and a scout scope.

Yes, I recall that, though when they took the bullet from Docs chair, it was obviously a larger caliber, like 44 or 45. It was in remarkably good condition for having been stopped by an iron/steel plate. :)

Unfortunately, much of the details of TV and film production is unencumbered by facts or common sense. Its the very rare viewer that ever knows the difference. Probably similar to my or most people acceptance of what can be done with computers or DNA results on most current shows. I do believe that most DNA tests take weeks rather than minutes to get results from. That would drag down the story line quite a lot though if they had to send it off or wait for actual results.

I recall an old film i saw when a kid about bible stories. In one scene, one of the Old Testament characters used a pistol to murder someone. I didnt know much at the time, but thought "Hey, I dont think they had guns then, but I dont really know when they came around....". I started looking for info in books (way before computers), luckily, my dad had some pretty good gun books around.

BTW, I hadnt had a TV in decades, but the past couple years have been in a situation where TV was available. Gunsmoke was one of the things I actually liked that was on. Lots of early episodes Id never seen, so lots of questions,....google for info on characters and timelines,...."Hey, wait, theres an actual Gunsmoke forum?"

The majority of the hollywood leverguns were 92's. This is because it would run on the 5 in 1 blanks used in the handguns, too.
