Drums along the Mohawk.

Post by gamekeeper »

I have just watched the above movie, one of my favorites,( plenty of flintlocks ).
Henry Fonda & the beautiful Claudette Colbert are the main stars but for the life of me I cannot understand how Henry Fonda could make a movie like that and still bring up his children to be so unpatriotic.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

Such attitudes as his are born from the desire to gain wealth. For those with low standards, money trumps patriotism every time.
IMHO.

I never watched the movie but enjoyed reading the book. It’s still one of my favorites.
The chapter of Adam Helmer’s run sticks in my mind. I don’t know how or if that was in the movie but it made me keep reading!
Even took the family to visit Fort Stanwix national historic site a few years ago. That area of New York was really way out on the frontier in those times.

As much as I love his movies, it seems Herny wasn't that much different than his children. They probably got it from him, he just had he sense to keep it to himself. (Based on comments from other actors, one being Jimmy Stewart. He said they were good friends but they never talked politics because their views were so different.)

Once they become wealthy, they become 'disconnected' from the common-people, and once that happens, their wealth fuels arrogance, and their cultural isolation makes them lose understanding of the world most of us live in. At that point they are no different than the Stalins, Pol Pots, and Hitlers of the world, save for the fact that they thankfully weren't born into positions of political leadership.

It's bad enough they have so much influence via the 'arts'.

I can't really watch sports OR movies much anymore, unless I know the performers to be people of integrity. I don't figure I'm missing much - I just read the books and enjoy them, probably more than I'd have enjoyed the movies. Besides, I've got plenty of other things to do besides watch movies that keep me busy, entertained, and content.

I'm not so sure about unpatriotic as it applies to Henry Fonda. We all know Jane made some very ugly decisions during the Viet Nam era.
Those who would define "patriotic" only in conservative and Republican terms are fooling themselves. A lot of American Democrats have given their blood for this country -- and maybe even some socialists from Wisconsin and Minnesota. If you study American history, there has always been room for radicals at our big table.

Bill - I think many previous generations of American Democrats were along the lines of "classic liberals", versus today's brand of leftist, statist, fascists - but Jane and Peter are both in the "today" camp.

GK - where did you catch this movie? I looked on Netflix and couldn't find it.
