Levergun photo from long ago

Post by Bill in Oregon »

A fellow posted this on an early 20th-century sportsman page on Facebook. Hunter mending his trouser, Oregon, date unknown.
Thought y'all might get a kick out of it. I said I thought it was likely the high Cascades, west side, going by the brush and the true firs. I am liking the scope on that Marlin!

Those rifles are pretty far out of reach to have that carcass hanging so close to the tent.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Thanks, I really like old pictures. This one reminds me of pictures of my Dad and Uncle Henry hunting in New Mexico west of Weed.

Wow! From all those racks it looks as if they've been there a while. Love it. Thanks Bill.

Wow, that camp look so primitive compared to camps we see today. I was born way too late. I'm not fond of the modern world.

Thanks Bill, I'm an Oregonian, and still hunt deer in the area. Often long for the "good old days" hunting with my grandpa, my dad, and uncles and cousins. We always hunted with Winchesters 94s, my grandpa had a Marlin, which I have given to a relative. My dad and I shot a wolf in the coast range while hunting deer, we called them timber wolves. He was completely black, male, very large. That would have been in the 50's. My dad and uncles and grandfather were loggers so they always knew where the bucks were for opening day. They carried a gun with them while falling timber and often killed bucks while at work. Those black tail deer don't go far, some believe they live in an area no larger than a mile. Thanks Bill

Great photo! I try and search for old original photo's like this and sometimes I get lucky and find a nice one. They end up in a frame and hand on the gun room wall.

That scope is pretty kewl  Must be off set to allow for case ejection.
OR if it is a Marlin, were they side ejection back then on some levers ?
One if the few that I have seen on a lever gun that looks alright!
I see the saddle in lower right ! Maybe the horses were the bear alarm ??

All three are Marlins. Notice the shape of the forend caps and the lack of band type mag hangers.

TWHBC, sent you a PM. I was in Weed on Saturday.
Gordon, as a fellow native Oregonian I know how much fun -- and how tough -- hunting blacktails can be.
