Levergun Fun! (Some 22s at the range...)

Post by Old No7 »

Gosh, it's just been way too long since I posted about -- or shot! -- a levergun!

So I set out this morning to correct that!!

Two 22s made the trip with me -- and both had levers, although the older one has no tube magazine...

On top is my Marlin 1897 Cowboy that's had the Williams Foolproof sight added and some work done to the trigger. It still isn't as slick and smooth as the 70s vintage Mountie I had to part with to get this one (it's 1 of 3 "Marlin Cowboys" that I have now...), but that just means she needs to be shot more! She shot well and after putting some rounds on paper at 50 yards, I had a blast shooting at leftover bits of clay targets that were out on the 100 yard berm. I didn't hit them all the time, but was close enough to leave the range with no large bits left to shoot at -- what a blast!

And on the bottom is the old early 1900's Stevens Ideal No.44 Sporting & Gallery Rifle that I'd added a tang sight to after I got it. That one shot pretty well with CCI Standard Velocity rounds, and I also used some CCI 22 Longs (not Long Rifle) that have the lighter/shorter bullets in them (they're usually hard to find too). Those did have more of a "crack" when fired though, which sort of surprised me. I'll have to try those on paper versus the other loads some time, as I'd heard they were better for older 22's that have a slow twist... Oh well, I guess I should measure the twist in the old girl too.

How about that...Not only did I get to shoot and post about leverguns today, I found out they need to be shot MORE!!

Which proves that... "Life is Great with a Lever!" *

Tight groups all.

* Gee, we can put that on the next gen of Leverguns t-shirts...............
