smallest powder charge for this result

Post by mickbr »

Wondering if any of the load software guys might be interested in the following. Here are the specs. 357 magnum in 24" barrel, 158grain generic cast RNFP. Wondering what is the smallest powder charge that gets it to 1000-1030fps or so. My guess from reloading manuals is 700X , Hodgon clays or titegroup, maybe vicinity of 3.7- 4 grains. Anything faster burning/lighter charge would be interested to know.

unique is good but you can get there with lighter faster powders.

Ya got yer big fluffy powders and your small dense powders. Many times the weight v. case volumn do not make sense. You are, IMO, better off with a powder that most fills the case. Small case volumn sometimes does not burn correctly and might even be a bad idea.

+1.
I like to match powder to case capacity.

I get nervous making public recommendations on loading. I will say that I use Blue Dot, and have 2400 as a backup if I run out of the BD. I also have a big jug of Red Dot. Everyone has their pet loads. Personally, I'd aim (no pun intended) for the load that is accurate, not target (again, no pun intended) a particular FPS. If I wanted a real light load, I'd use a Special case, not the magnum case.

And the winner is..... Red Dot gets there with 3.2 grains and just under 50% load density. 4.5 grains of TrailBoss would do the same with the case almost plumb full. 3.3 grains of Hodgden Clays or 3.5 grains of Norma R1 at 50% load density look good also. And if you want an easy metering ball powder Win 231 gets there with 3.7 grains but the case is just over 1/3 full so you would have plenty of room for a double charge.

And these are all mild loads (says QuickLoad).

I think I'd go with Trail Boss. It works quite well as a "soft shooter" load in my 44 Magnum Puma, and with RD 265 gr bullets it's pretty accurate...

Thanks earlmck for the Quickload info, that's what I was after. I am temped to get this software myself. I got clays so that will get chronied first.

Bullseye at 4.0 grs give you the 1000 fps with a 158 rnfp with excellent uniform ballistics and excellent accuracy. Extreme shot to shot spread of less than 30 fps and single digit SD's. I have shot thousands of these out of my Rossi's.

Not sure what you are saying. I thought the OP wanted a minimal load of fast powder to achieve 1000fps in a .357 rifle. I gave him one that I have shot and chrono'd extensively that is very accurate and uniform. I do not understand the comment"Then why not continue to do so". Please enlighten me.

The Man's own post said he's getting 1000 fps with a load that is accurate and consistant. How much explaining do I need to do?? Here's your card. (Yes, I'm starting to channel TERRY)

Quote above from OP. Bullseye is faster burning

What is "Here's your card"?

I think he mixed you up as the OP.

Blaine I'm the OP and asked if Bullseye is an option. Retmech then answered yes with some good load and ballistics information. Btw thanks for that information Retmech :)

Oops -- my bad. I missed bullseye somehow on my QuickLoad query but it is a very viable alternative. With the same inputs as I used for all the others QL says 3.3 grains of bullseye would get the 1000 fps velocity at a bit above 1/3 case full at lower pressure than any of the others. And although bullseye leaves plenty of room for a double charge, QL shows that double charge as just a scosh over SAAMI max pressure suggestion so your rifle shouldn't come unglued.

I was using 3.0 grains of Bullseye and 3.5 grains Reddot with both 148gr WC’s and 158gr FP’s in a 24” Carbine and was surprise at how loud they were. No “crack” so they were sub sonic. Didn’t chrono them but would be interesting to see what they are doing. Todd/3leg
