Making A Knife From A Bolt

Post by Pete44ru »

.

A neat knife-making video, the size of the finished knife limited only by the size of the bolt used.

I've made 1 knife from scratch- shaping, profiling, heat treating, polishing and scales. It is indeed a lot of work.
I also took an old worn out 00 Swiss file and made a long thin knife for the heck of it. That steel holds an edge like you cant believe! Now I just buy premade blanks- heat treat ovens are expensive!
I've seen knives made from railroad spikes- those are real neat!
Gotta make sure ya dont use cheap Chinese low grade bolts.

Depending on what you're starting with, you don't necessarily need a heat treating oven. In fact edge tempering can often result in a better blade as it only hardens the edge, so you wont risk stress cracks in the blade, and the knife will handle hits better without fracturing.
Since the knife Pete linked is so small, it's a novelty and material is irrelevant. But it is very nice looking!
