Original bullet weights?

Post by mikld »

I have been reloading for a lot of years and presently only reload for 11 cartridges. I believe many guns/cartridges will work quite well with the loads, bullet weights/shapes they were originally designed around. In my searching I have not been able to find any text, publication or website that hat the information about original loads per caliber. I have found a few, mostly one at a time but the sources were haphazard and hit-or-miss. Does anyone know of a source, a text or website that I can use to find original loadings? (I know some cartridges have been "improved" and popularity has changed some.) I have "Cartridges of the World" and a few "historical" reloading texts and a dozen various reloading manuals, but none have the info I'd like to find. Any help?

Thnx

If you're thinking "factory load", I don't know that the factories have ever made that info available to the public. That is, with the exception of the old black powder loads.

44-40-200, 45-70-405, etc.

Companies tend to be very secretive about the exact loadings they use in factory ammo. If you're looking for the original reloading info, you'd need to find reloading books that were around when the load first came out. Today many times companies use powders that are not available to the public, which further complicates matching factory loads.

Perhaps my post was a bit misleading, I'm looking specifically for bullet weights/designs and perhaps velocities...

Aaaahhh.... My best reference is Cartridges Of The World, but you've already got that it sounds like.

I don't know if this is something like you're looking for, but when I Google a caliber, Wiki will have a history (usually). This is what I got for 30-06...They covered it from the 30-03 to the present.

mikld, I understand what you are asking for, a comprehensive list in one place of original factory bullet weights- I have not seen one myself. Might be a project to take on yourself, would be a good idea for a blog maybe.
