POI question
Ok I got this S&W AR-22, I put a scope on it today and sighted it in but it did the same thing with the fixed sights.
I shot at a ground hog at ten paces yesterday, aimed for his chest as it was facing me on all fours and the bullet hit the ground right under him.
So set up a target at 20 yards and sighted the scope in and it shoots them in one ragged hole on bulls eye but if I move up to ten yards it hits two inches low and if I move back to forty yards two inches high but a tight groups.
What`s the problem or is that normal.

Re: POI question
Pitchy,
Your sights and/or scope is mounted several inches above the bore so at close range...5-15 yards or so....it's going to shoot low.
On my field .22's I like a point of impact at 50 yards. After you achieve that, just test it at the different ranges...25, 75,100 and see where the point of impact is and use a bit of Kentucky windage for targets that are not at 50 yards.
Also, for field guns, I prefer CCI Mini-Mags or another quality Hi Vel. round. This will help minimize your need for "Kentucky" hold over/under. Stay away from the $15 a brick junk. With junk ammo you get velocities from 1,000-1,300.
Usually, with practice and knowing your rifle, it's pretty much easy to hit small things out to a hundred. ----6

Re: POI question
Thanks Jack, ya know I was wondering about the scope it sits on top of the carry handle.
Don`t know what brand the ammo was and I shot it all, it was hollow point with a big hole in it.
She`s good to go just need to know her better, hopefully that was the last chuck.

Re: POI question
High sights do increase the depth of your 'point-blank' range, but make hits really close more difficult (although you can set a laser sight to track the bullet path close-in if you want and keep sights or scope set for ideal long-range use). Lower sights make close shots more easily placed, but give you less range depth for 'point-blank' use.

Re: POI question
Something else to consider. Is this a scope made for a 22? If you are using a fixed objective centerfire scope the parallax is usually set for 100 yards. Scopes for 22's are usually set for 50 yards.

Re: POI question
Just a suggestion Pitchy ! I got one of these for my 22.
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/89951 ... s-one-only
When squirrel shooting , my hit ratio went up big time when I got one! I used to have to guess the range, then guess the hold over or under. Made a little shooting chart at known distances and put it on the stock. Had a 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 yard solution. Now I guess the range and set the elevation. Hold right on and squeeze. Like I said the hits went way up. They have different models for different scopes to fit. Was well worth it for me. What ever you do ... Good luck on your hunts.

Thanks Bronco, I`ll use the shotgun with buckshot for varmints from now on seems to work the best and kills them on the spot.
I was just curious about why it was doing it and now understand, that`s a neat item you posted though.

Re: POI question
Pitchy,
the guys have it ^, it's normal.
I handgun hunted a lot and my superblackhawk was sighted at approx 50 yards. a little less likely, just paced off.... but, one day I was about 8 feet from a deer, took careful aim at the head and of course shot under it. that guy jumped and looked around but didn't bolt and I didn't miss the second shot. so......... from time to time we learn the same lessons, eh?

Re: POI question
Thanks Grizz, I did the same thing years a go with a SB I was laying beside a log and a deer came walking by at about five yards.
I aimed for the heart and shot under it but never got a second shot.
