uberti 50-95 1876
Ive had a hankering for a big lever action (though swearing off using big game bolt actions some time ago, go figure). I took a look at these and was impressed but research on the limited info suggests a few problems. Feeding, chambering, accuracy problems.... anyone have any opinions on this model and calibre? Uberti do such a slick 1873... its surprising the 1876 aren't always user ready for that price level..

Re: uberti 50-95 1876
if this does not work out without expensive custom work, why not consider the Miroku made Winchester 1886 chambered in .45-90?
The cartridge dimensions are quite similar as would be the ballistics ( mine has taken DG with 450 grain bullets at 2150 fps) and the 1886 strength and reliability is well known.
Best of luck on your quest.

nice load thats over 4600ftlbs, 458 win mag territory. In this instance I am after the calibre, if they still did a 1886 in one of the old 50cals I would be interested.

Re: uberti 50-95 1876
mickbr,
I once handled an original Win 1886 in 50-110 WCF. I've wanted one since.
Pretty much like you said because of the caliber. I'd love to have an 1876 copy in 50-95 as well just because it's a lever gun in a big caliber.
I once shot a Winchester bolt gun in 458 Win Mag. Round one hurt like hell. Round two caused a painful flinch, and round 3 left me in pain for a week. I had that thin cinched up in my shoulder as tight as I could,, but it was beyond reason painful. Never shot another one, never will shoot another one.

don't know why the repro wouldn't be reliable. the original is very smooth and feeds and ejects well ....and is quite accurate:
going to try for moose again this fall with this one

Mickbr,
You are correct, this is the 1886 45-90 that 86er took to Africa and killed an ele, leopard, and a few cape buff. Those hot450 grain Kodiak loads came from Grizzly cartridge and I can testify as to their effectiveness on bison- knocks them over like metal targets.

Re: uberti 50-95 1876
I had a Uberti 76 in 40-60 and it was a fine rifle. Only 50 I had trouble with was a Winchester 86 in 50 Express. I never did get it to group the way I wanted it to. Winchester used a very slow twist on that particular model and it would only stabilize bullets that looked more like shoe buttons.
I did have to thin the rims of some 45-70 brass that I cut down for a friends 76 in 45-60 Worked fine then.
Heck, try one for yourself. It's fun getting those old things to shoot properly.

Re: uberti 50-95 1876
Howdy,
I have a Brownchester 71 that I converted to a 50-110 for a retirement gift to me It is a kill and maim at hot loads with the 547gr cast. Kills what you hit and maims you, and that is with a real good recoil pad. Prone and bench shooting may cause injury, at least hurts more than standing by a lot. They make Marlins in the 50 Alaskan.
Anyway those are two other 50 cal. cartridges I know of if you have a mind to.
Good luck on you project.

Re: uberti 50-95 1876
Thanks all for the replies and those pics too!. I wasn't too keen on customising, though the model 71 would be a great gun. This was pretty much an idea just to be able to purchase and shoot, and also part of it was the history of a traditional model. I can't remember where but there was a long thread running on the Uberti/Cimarron 50-95 which outlayed the most common issues...might have been castboolits or maybe the Wire, I am still trying to find it again. I'll post it up if I can find it for interests sake.
