We Had A Chance To Honor The Deceased Military

Post by Blaine »

I love playing with the Dept. of Washington State American Legion Band.
This morning the Graham Emmanuel Baptist Church put on an elaborate ceremonty with over 400 Crosses and read the names of some who gave their all for the USA.
The display will be left up until the day after Memorial Day.
(On Memorial Day, we will play another ceremony at the Captial Rotunda, and another at a cemetary in Olympia)
My picture couldn't capture the scope of the entire display. The Horse and Wagon (Casson?) were particularly splendorous.

Thanks Blaine. It's sad but in so many ways Memorial Day is celebrated only by folks taking an extra day off and not even thinking about it's meaning.

And yet, just as I finished the above a flight of four AT-6's flew over in formation practicing for next weekends ceremony at the local cemetery.

Nope, nope, nope. Thanks for the kind words, but it's MY honor to continue serving as best I can.

Thank you Blaine, from one old tuba player to another. I had the honor to play for many departing Savannah on their way to Saigon in 1962.

20 years ago I was staying in quarters at the Navy Sub Base in Pearl Harbor. Sunday morning I decided to attend the chapel service in the tiny on-base chapel. What really caught me off-guard: during the service a fellow stood up and mentioned a sub that was lost on patrol during WWII, and he then read aloud the names of every man of that crew.

Sitting there listening to that made me wonder at how many of those crewmen had been sitting in that chapel before they went out on their last patrol ..... and 50+ years later, their name(s) were being read in remembrance.

I asked later, and they were doing that every week: naming a sub that was lost, and the names of the crew. I didn't ask how long that memorial reading had been in progress but it was and is the most incredible & poignant bit of Memorial I've ever encountered anywhere. I've seen plenty of monuments and such, but there is something quite different about having names read aloud.

Without those who served, we would be in a much worse place.

I think those who gave their time to entertain the troops should be remembered. Robert Leslie Towne "Bob" Hope is the first of several I could name who gave comfort and support to the service members in such a way that they deserve to be remembered, too. May all those who passed in service to this Country be remembered.
