Poor ammo performance

Post by wvfarrier »

My .02 on the range

I recently purchased a bulk buy of 45 acp ammo. There were several boxes of Ten Ring 230 grain fmj ammo. Apparently this stuff is made by DRT as a less expensive option. I used this in my DW Specialist and Sig Tacops 1911 on this trip. Its my first time using this ammo and will also be my last. I intend to disassemble it all and use it for reloads. Out of 86 rounds:
3- Failure to fire (i cant remember the last time i had factory ammo do this)
2- Failed to eject
6- Failed to chamber

The rounds also didnt eject very far....more like popped out and fell at my feet.

Now these are WELL broken in guns that have eaten everything else ive fed them. Just to double check the guns I ran some light reloads through them and both ran perfect.

Anyways. just a heads up on this stuff.

Sounds like they've improved! I bought some .45 acp of theirs a few years back and over half of them wouldn't chamber. The other half were 50% fail-to-fires.

Yes, I have that poster - hilarious - with the bear holding the hunter's shirt in his mouth!

As for me, I have kept up with reading about all of the whizz-bang high tech defensive rounds and their tests in gelatin, water, phone books, roasted marshmallows  , etc. - and I have purchased and tested a few of these over the years, including the early KTW Armor Piercing rounds (when they were legal) and the Velet explosive rounds (when they were legal here). The Velet's were fun to use on watermelons, but I have not yet read of any accounts where watermelons attacked the citizenry.

For everyday carry and therefore personal and family defense, I will still stick with the Federal HST loads for my .45 1911's and 9mm Shield
- 230gr .45 HST Standard Pressure, 124gr 9mm HST - both of have been tested against multiple other brands and beat them for penetration (including things like auto glass, etc.), consistent weight retention and respectable expansion, and unfailing dependability in all platforms tested. And this was NOT by the factory guys, although they were there - it was done by unbiased officers of various police agencies in more than one state. The visual results have been available on the Internet for many years. I am still puzzled as to why so many folks have looked elsewhere for the best general carry round.

Incidentally, Gold Dots - the reported "gold standard" touted by the FBI - did not do as well as the HST's in these tests.

The HST's were originally only available to peace officers, but are now sold on the open market. I have purchased mine from Graf's, but others have them, too.

Case closed.

I wouldn't count on it. With the ones I had the primer pockets were so loose the primers would almost fall out on their own.

Thanks for the heads up. I would think anyone could make decent 45 auto ammo these days.

More sorry ammo to report! Winchester bulk-pack 22 LR 36gr plated hollow-point. I just finished a several year old box of the same stuff that was fine...however a new box has some issues with firing...some not primed at all I guess. It's also a little big for some chambers. No kidding! Load a ten shot mag and at least one or two will not fire first strike...some won't fire no matter how may times you rotate the cartridge.

Other than the yellow box ball, we keep plenty of Remington Golden Saber for carry ammo for the 1911 .45's.

I am probably weird but I usually just carry hardball.

It was designed to take the fight out of a combatant.

It feeds in almost anything.

It penetrates better than the big open hollowpoints.

It is what I prefer.

OOOPS .. (EDIT) ... I also prefer my own handloads. If there's a problem it is mine.
