What's your favorite bore cleaner?

Post by GunnyMack »

Now that our bird season is over I decided that I needed to clean my .410 & 28 ga and put them away in the safe.
I have used Hoppes since day 1 and it's always worked well enough. Today I tried some Ballistol on the .410 and was very surprised at the amount of black crud I got out of the bores. I've always used Ballistol for my front loaders.

So, what's your favorite for cleaning your irons?

Butch's Bore Shine works really well. Dissolves the plastic out of shotgun barrels really well.
I've used more Hoppes #9 than anything else, though.

It depends

1. For copper fouling, I find the foaming bore cleaner work for me.

2. Ed's Red seems to work as a general solvent for residues in rifles and shotguns.

3. For black powder rifles a water impregnated patch is my first step.

4. For a spray pack, G96 works well.

5. If I want to put something in the back of the safe, I use power steering fluid cut back with a little Ed's Red.

No experience with handguns or heavy leading.

Just came back from the range, closed due to bush fires, black powder morning.

I used Hoppes #9 for years and nothing else. Then I found out about Ballistol and I've started using that. I never have used Ballistol for copper fouling though.

It's like Shasta said, for my Kentucky rifle I use hot soapy water and rise with straight HOT water. All of the cartridge guns hand guns and long guns get the job with Hoppe's #9. Never had a problem with rusty bores.

Ballistol. Since most of my shootin' is with ffg I clean with 10:1 Ballistol and hot water then lube with more Ballistol. Hoppe's No. 9 for smokeless stuff.

Hopes #9......all the others claim to be better but in reality they just want a piece of the pie by making claims that theirs is better.

I buy it by the quart...several a year.....

But.......the old Hoppes was/is better, when it was made in Coatsville, Pa.......I don't know why I say that,..maybes it's the smell of the old stuff.....my whole basement smells of Hoppes .......

As for copper fouling ...nothing beats Sweets.....but as I shoot only 5 thousand rounds a year of jacketed stuff.....223 and .308 my vote goes to,HOPPES #9.---6

Pretty mundane. Hot soapy water for BP. Hoppe's for everything else. Lubes is where it gets more specialized.

I’ve only ever used Hoppe’s No. 9 for general filth/copper fouling. For leading, I use a bit of a copper “Chore Boy” scouring pad wrapped around a bronze brush, works a treat.

Hoppe's No. 9. The wife likes the smell. So there's no choice.

2nd place belongs to HOT water. But that's only for black powder fouling and residue.

Wipeout foam and liquid, hands down.

Odorless, the only cleaner that doesn't bother the better half in the house.

Depends on what, exactly, I'm trying to clean.

For day-in day-out, I use Break-Free.
