FINALLY !

Post by GunnyMack »

7 days, 21 hours later and the lectricity is back up!
I've been running the essential stuff, pellet stoves, fridges & freezer, well pump and oil burner plus some lighting from generator. About 75 gallons of gas, 2 oil changes and the generator has been worth every penny!
Not that I mind living like its 1918 but boy it sure is nice to be back in the 21st century!!

Glad You made it through. I was wondering yesterday how You were making out . We live in a rural area and have a generator as well. My biggest concern beside heat and the water pump is the sump pump in the basement. 4' of water down there would sure ruin My day for along time.

Let's see, what would I do differently?
I might rig up a larger gas tank, 24 hrs between filling instead of every 12.
Or
Invest some money in a whole house generator but that would still require me to hump fuel ,diesel most likely, I really do not want a 1000 gal propane tank sitting in the yard. Yes I know they can be buried but I'm on top of the 'Mountian' and ya can't dig 36" without hitting solid rock!
Next thing I might do is invest in a second gas generator so I can get my shop up & running so at least I can work. Was a long boring week!

Not much in the way of enlightenment with this storm, we survived Hurricane Sandy, out for 14 days &23 hours. Sandy knocked trees across my driveway, had to cut my way out, pole snapped which dumped the transformer in the driveway.
Sandy we had a crew from the Carolinas fix the mess, this time it was a crew from Alabama. Thank you gents!

I could have rigged up some lights in the basement to load but I took care of all that before the last election!

Yes John, I'll pay you when we meet!

I changed my log splitter and generator over to propane, used these guys http://www.uscarburetion.com/. If you don't change the timing you will lose a little hp or wattage (7000 will drop to around 6200). But in 8 years no gummed up carbs and they start every time

So, because of the stormy weather - those new whizz-bang portable Costco solar generators are out?

Glad you're back up! :-)

Sure is a PITA.

I get by with a little 4K rig I got at Tractor Supply for about $250.

Not a bad rig for the price. I need to get a bigger one so that I can
run the hot water heater, too. But the 4K setup will run the frig, a few lights,
and the well pump. I mostly heat with wood, so I can get warm water.
Cook on the grill. Next time I'll get a grill with a side burner, but I was skint
when I got the grill.

Still, it's GREAT when the grid come back up!

That is only one outlet of many. Here is an Amazon link showing one such model. There are many models at various prices, depending upon how much emergency power you need to store and/or use, just like regular emergency generators.

Thanks for the link John! Interesting unit but I really doubt it would really make a difference for keeping as much going as I did.
One of those would be handy for our Canada camp!
