94 AE Trapper half cock conversion

Post by OldWin »

I've had this little 44 carbine for a while. Always hated the rebounding hammer. Most info on conversion involve using the original lower tang with lockwork from ser.#4.8 million up to 5.5 million (I think). Some of these parts are nearly impossible to find now and I got tired of looking.
The earlier, post 64 leaf spring lower tang parts, I had mostly sourced from a buddy. These lower tangs also use the smaller hammer screw like the AE. The difference is that it has the tenons like the pre-64 that lock in the frame.
Here is a pic of the original, and planned replacement lower tang assemblies.
Then, I filed the tenons off so the replacement lower tang would fit in the AE reciever.
Once that was done, I cold blued the lower where the work was done, assembled it, and put it in the rifle.
Presto! The 94 Trapper as it should be!

Neato Jay.....I tell ya..those rednecks in Maine know how to simplify about any mechanical item. I once saw a guy upstate who turned an old toilet into a barbecue grill just by adding a grate from an old refrigerator to set the steak on. He filled the water holding tank on the back of the toilet with ice to hold his beer in. With this combination cooler, grill, and toilet, he had an old piece of asbestos in front of the tank to keep the ice from melting. After cooking and drinking he washed it all down and used the toilet for what it was meant for......funniest thing I ever saw.

There's just something' about a rebounding hammer that annoys me and others who are used to the traditional hammer/sear arrangement to no end. Probably another reason I don't own any but you Jay, being a connoisseur of fine traditional leverguns have found a fine and lasting fix. GOOD WORK YOUNG MAN!!!! ----6

Good job on the conversion! :) What brand is that rear sight you have there?
Have you hugged your rifle today?

Thank you very much. The rear sight is an XS. This rifle has been a guinea pig for many, many sighting experiments. Scopes, both long and standard eye relief, red dots, and irons. This, by far, is the best setup. The factory front sight on these trappers are excellent. Thankfully, it didn't need to be changed
This is my first 50yd shots after mounting the XS. Only leaned against the truck door.

Great job adapting what you have to work with, looks great. When I did my 94AE trapper 357 mag I'm guessing 15 years ago those lowers were easier to find and I'm guessing cheaper too even allowing for inflation. My lower tang and hammer were also leaf spring but a later run so pretty much a direct bolt in replacement. I also installed an XS Ghost Ring which back then was called the AO (Ashley Outdoors) Ghost Ring sight. I have been totally happy with my Trapper the trigger pull dropping from a tad gritty but decent 4 pounds down to a silky smooth 2.5 pounds.

Not to brag, but I did that to my 94AE waayyyyyyyy back in 87 or 88. I might have been one of the first to do it too. Posted a tech article about doing it on Beartooth Shooters forum back in 2002.

Gadzooks, I didn't realize it had been so long ago.

Getting rid of that abominable bouncy hammer action was the best thing I did with that little lever gun.

I think I saw that article, Joe. I haven't had this carbine near that long. I traded into it ten years or so ago. I liked the way it shot and carried but simply detested the hammer.
I mostly used it for snowshoeing and woods loafing. Now it has a new lease on life. I actually wouldn't mind another in 30-30, but the earlier top eject version.
