Going "Old School" -- S&W 17-2 6" Revolver

Post by Old No7 »

I do love my leverguns, but I'm a long-time S&W revolver fan too...

I've got a very nice 4" Model 617 stainless .22 that I got a few years ago, and while it shoots very well, I've been hankering to get an older blued Model 17 similar to the one I had back in the college years -- that I foolishly sold off to pay for some keyboard equipment. (Well OK, I got a Hammond B3 Organ & Leslie 147 rotating speaker -- so maybe it wasn't so foolish after all...)

But now since it's been several decades since I've dragged around what seemed like 2,000 pounds of keyboards and speakers, I've been looking for a nice Model 17 again to help reconnect me with the past. Plus it seems the older I get, the more I like the older stuff... If that's going "Old School" -- then sign me up for more classes!

Anyway, I found this "almost mint" Model 17-2 yesterday, and it has the pinned barrel, target hammer & trigger, and the cylinder is recessed for the rims. The action is very crisp, and there's only a faint turn line, so I don't think she was shot very much. And the dark figure in the target stocks really captured my attention and helped seal the deal.

The guys on the S&W Forum said I did pretty well getting it for only $600 out the door in that condition with those grips on it.

Now I've just got to get out and shoot it!!!

That was a flashback to about 1972ish when most really good bands hauled around a B3 and Leslie....This one guy had a smokin' 12 string that he played through an 80 ton ( ) Fender amp AND and Leslie...This was before Army Bands got modern and serious musicians brought their own equipment. Needless to say, loading detail sucked a big 'un.

Good score. Now all you need is a M18....
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

that's not "old-school", that 6" S&W Model 17 is pure class, I owned one, sold it, still hate myself... :(

Good score for a good price. My 6" doesn't have the TT or TH, but my 8 & 3/8 (with old cardboard box) does.

That's a twin to the one I have! I traded a SBH .44 for it. Think I came out better for it!
If memory serves, mine is a 1952 production.

Cool!

My '59 vintage 17 is the first handgun I bought myself. Still best .22lr revolver I've ever owned.

I don't know what came over me but I sold my M17 to fund the purchase of a 617 when they came out. I still do have the 4", 6 shot 617 and it's a tack driver, even if it doesn't have the class of the 6" blued beauty. I'd say you did well!

This thread made me go look at mine lastnight. It is a 6inch, pinned and recessed, dates to 1959. Shoots real good when I use cheap ammo and Pacos nose tool.
