I just noticed for the first time a "stamped" GM just in front of the trigger. It's clear and looks like a "factory" stamp?
It's made in 46, it's a 32 special. I have hunted with it for years, killed a buck with it this last fall and have never noticed
that before. I have had it apart, refinished the wood etc. and did not see it before. Anyone know what that might be?

Good morning,
There are most often small numbers or letters stamped on either side of the lever on Winchesters. These are inspectors marks which were applied either during the manufacture of the receiver itself or during the assembly of the full rifle.

.
IME, Winchester's fitters typically stamped their mark (numeral or letters) into the forward end of the lower tang, just ahead of the trigger.
I have no clue as to just who the "GM" refers to (sorry).
[EDIT: it looks like twobit & I were posting at the same time]

Sure enough, I checked some of my other 94s, and they do have initials on
them, not always the same place. Thanks again.

Twobit, in my safe and one in my son's safe what info can you get from the initials on the lever? I have 3 '94s in my safe and 1 in my son's safe.

JerryB,
There is no "information to get" based on the letters stamped on the rifle. As I mentioned they are just inspectors marks. At some point in the manufacture of the rifle it was inspected and then stamped to show that was done.
