Fired the shovelhead today.

Post by M. M. Wright »

It warmed up here and the overcast burned off to leave sunshine and almost 70 degrees so I put the new battery in my old 66FLH and fired it up. Had a real tough time talking myself out of a little putt but I fell on the front porch the day before yesterday and my new knee took a real pounding so I just limped around the shop listening to it idle.
I am cleaning up another addition; 1914 vintage 1894 SRC in 30WCF. Used Evapo Rust on the bore and got a good start. While scrubbing the bore I couldn't find my crown protector so I took a 223 case and cut the head off with my tube cutter, slid it on a one-piece rod and screwed the brush on. Crown is protected so I made another for another rod with the jag on it. I'm probably not the first to do this but I wanted to pass it on in case someone else is as cheap as I am. You can always find a used 223 lying around.
This new to me SRC is pretty nice externally. Not much wear and quite a lot of blue but may be an old re-blue. Was probably shot with corrosive primers and left to sit for a hundred years. Stocks have been sanded down way past the wood and were nearly white so I stained them to about original Winchester color. Can't hurt what's been messed up already. Bore is starting to like it will be OK with jacketed bullets.

It's always good to run a little gas through the carburetor once in a while so our babies are ready to go come ridin' weather! And I've got the big brother to your 94, a 1909 model that had the same treatment. Shoots jacketed bullets probably as well as it ever did but it doesn't handle my casties very nicely.

Music to the ears them old Harleys glad ya got her fired up Ron and cool tip on the 223 case.
Between you and Earl your gonna convince me to drag my Shovel out, I put a Mikuni carb on it last fall and the dern choke lever is real hard to get at under the fat bob tanks so I`m going to fab a extension so I can get at it may put a dice on the end of it.
Then of coarse will have to start it too, haven`t been feeling well lately so we`ll see how it goes. :)

Nice! The older the Harley, the better they sound.
Sadly, mine's an 08 TC. :D

Got out in the garage anyway and made the choke lever, I`m real happy on how it turned out.
It was embarrassing to have to get off the bike to run the choke before. :D

Bike sure is dirty, the other one is worse yet with all the wood working we`ve been doing making dust every where.

Yeah I hear that. Mines over in my dad's cellar. I got a cover on it but it still gets dusty. My old dad's table saw is in the same area so.......

That dice looks big in those pictures but isn`t in person, I have the next smaller dice in red that might look good too.

I like them both Lenn. The S&S Super E on mine has a lever type enrichener at the base of the air cleaner. I should probably dress it up some way.

Hey OldWin, don't ever be sorry about any Harley you have. Just be glad you got one. Those newer ones need much less workin' on to keep them running.

Thanks Ron, this bike came with a SS I then changed it to a Bendix which is one of my favorite carbs but for some reason this bike is very cold blooded and coughed and sputtered on both those carbs so thus why the Mikuni which seems to work pretty good.
They say the CV carb works well but more spendy then the Mikuni.
Put her back in the shed until spring. :)
