Polypropolene And Fabric Punch

In the article "small charges in standard cases" Paco metions glueing on a polypropolene disk cut from a fabric punch for a gas check. I have no idea what polypropolene is and I can't find a proper size fabric punch for 30 & 35 caliber bullets. Can anyone help? I suspect the poly stuff is nothing more than an empty milk container.

Lids off of margarine,cool whip,chip dip containers etc. are usable as wads. A cutter can be made by sharpening the mouth of a cartridge case and will last long enough to make plenty for a test run. Super glue them to bullet bases.Have fun.

There is an alternative. Some know it as vegetable wads. Kind of a generic term. This is what I use;

Mr. Gasket 9615MRG Compressed Gasket Material Sheet

This is basically high temperature exhaust header gasket material.
to cut it I use these
Hollow Punch Set

The best/fast way to use them is to chuck it in drill press and spin it into the gasket material over a block of wood.

Doesn't that polypropylene and polystyrene melt and foul the bore? I know plastic sabots on MLs will and you have to use solvent to remove it.

Yes,
For black powder loads aren't as bad as smokeless. The BP fouling helps prevent the plastic from sticking just like it helps prevent leading.

Another source that is no long available was the waxed paper milk cartons, Nowadays they too are plastic coated.

I just got in yesterday three more of these:

I now have several, one each for .31, .36, and .44/.45 caliber black powder wads, 12 and 20 gauge wads, .410, and the shotgun bore for a LeMat (roughly an 18 gauge). I just got in an 11mm punch which is roughly .430", so will use it for black powder cartridge loads for the .44 Colt and .44 Russian - though it would work for any modern .44 caliber cartridge (.429-.430" bullets). You need to translate the metric punches into what you need, but that is easy to do. These are good quality (though made in China), relatively cheap, and arrive in a couple weeks. I highly recommend them!

I like bar coasters for wad material. I have my family save me the polypropylene tops as mentioned above. Have fun!

Whereas I'm only on my 2nd box of 1,000 gas-checks in .308, I'm likely on my 100th box in .452! I like milk on my cereal and the wife likes creamer in her coffee, so, getting two products for the price of one is smart shoppin'! Some might say "cheap", but they probably are only good as targets...

I make wads from fiber paper egg cartons, works for me. We buy the 6 dozen pak from Costco. The top is flat and plain, no ridges and such. About 12"X12" square, lots of wads there.

You can buy old wool felt hats at Good Will stores for next to nothing, makes for very good wads.

No don't do that, the sweat and grime stiffens the felt!
