Back in the Day/Travels of a Maine Warden

Post by OldWin »

Thought you guys might like some old pics. My grandfather was a Maine Warden in the 40's up in the Allagash area. He served with "Uncle Gilley" until Gilley went to serve in Patton's 3rd Army. They were like brothers their whole lives and were the finest woodsmen I've ever known. I'm very lucky to have many pictures and artifacts from their time. I figured now that winter has settled in, I'd post some of it up if you guys are interested.

Couple more. Standing by the car, Gramp is on the right, Gilley on the left.
In front of the camp, Gramp is on the far right, Gilley the far left. Rare instance of Gramp "glamming" it with his High Standard model B. This pistol was a gift from my Grandmother and Gramps constant companion. Especially during the war when ammo was scarce and expensive. Gilley told me Gramp was an incredible shot with this pistol. It has accounted for more game from deer to grouse than I will ever shoot. Even in his later years, I've seen Gramp shoot this pistol well.....one handed, as they did back then. I still have the pistol, pictured here with Gramps Remington field knife and his compass inscribed with his name and the date 2/15/42.
We were fishing with Gilley at Canada Falls lake one time and as we rounded a point he told of gramp shooting a kingfisher out if the air from the bow of a canoe with the HS. Things were different back then.

I always liked this picture. Gramp is on the left. I'm not entirely sure who he is with and will need to do some research. The 94src is a 30wcf and was gramps. The 92 rifle obviously belongs to the other fellow and if I had to guess, I'd say it's a 38, this bein Maine and all.
To put together a picture like this says a lot about the kind of woodsmen these men were back then.

Thanks Lenn! I figured you'd get a kick out em. I got more I will post up. I will have to try and get some of the stuff in the pics too. Like I said, I still have a bunch of it.
Gramp used several Winchesters over the years. I have a pic with an 86 rifle in 38-56. He said he didn't care for it and didn't keep it for long. Bummer. :(
He used a 94 src in 30wcf, but didn't settle until he went with a model 64 in 30wcf. Strange choice I thought for a man humping thick woods on foot carrying a lot of gear. I have it's twin, but sadly, his got away.
He did prefer longer barrels, as evidenced by his 6" High Standard and his 6" Colt Army Special service revolver, which I also have.

That's great, thanks for sharing.

There's a nicely done museum for the Maine Game Wardens at the Maine Animal Park in Gray, Maine (1/2 hour north of Portland -- great place to visit with the kids). The museum includes a well done tribute to those Game Wardens who were killed in action during the early days -- and sadly, there were quite a few; from weather or accidents or 2-legged villains...

I think they too were part of the "greatest generation", even if they preceded WWII by many years.

Thanks No.7
My grandfather spoke of the many that went "missing". Some of these were killed. There were hermit trappers back then. Gramp knew a few and was friendly with a couple. Sometimes you depended on them for shelter in winter in their main or line camps or hogans. My grandfather was very clear that "discretion" needed to be used when enforcing the law. He could list off names of guys with illegal deer hanging in their sheds that he wouldn't touch. He said these men were only feeding their families and weren't doing anything that he wouldn't do in their place.
Where they drew the line was guys shooting moose to sell to logging camps. Moose were scarce in those days, and this was the reason for some of the missing. Many of the poachers were from "over the boundary" and would shoot a warden if they could escape back across the border. It worked the other way too, gramp saw one flunky poacher shot by a partner. The shooter was a first class woodsman and they never caught him. Especially when he was willing to shoot a partner, he'd surely shoot them.
Gramp was also in on the search and capture of the escaped German POWs from the Spencer Lake camps. There isn't much left of them now but some ovens and cement foundations. There is a monument now though.

Great photos! My Grandfather told of going up to work on Lathrop engines perhaps on generators at POW camps in Maine during the war. He said they had very little fencing if any, and when he ask what stops them from escaping, he was told that the lucky ones find there way back in a day or so.

Few more with some Winchesters.
The above mentioned 86 in 38-56.
A nice buck and bear combo.
Then a before and after hunt pic with 94's. Gramp is on the right in both pics with the carbine. I can't quite recall the other fellows name. Looks to be armed with a 94 rifle. Will have to check. The picture was taken in Langtown, west of Eustis.

Very nice - There's some BIG woods about Eustis (I used to hunt North of Wilson's Mills), and back then it was a real chore to get up there.

I remember that back about Nov 1974 (when I was hunting about 10 miles from there), some hunter was reported "missing" by his fellows up near Eustis, and when he didn't appear by sundown, the warden(s) put out a huge foghorn (on a trailer) on a logging road in the same area, which let out a blast every little bit so the lost person could get a bearing to it. (The lost hunter was waiting by the foghorn in the morning, when the wardens arrived, none the worse for wear)

I thought is was a cool thing for the wardens to do.

Time for a few more. Some animal pics. One is gramp helping a guy get a doe off the ice that had fallen and couldn't get ger feet under her. There is another with he and my grandmother with a motherless fawn.
And Mike, gramps faithful partner. He could be rigged to pull a "moose sled" and haul considerable loads for quite a distance. This was an immeasurable help in the tough country that needed to be traversed. I still have gramps moose sled and it's in fine condition. The car in the picture became home one winter to a very possessive ermine (weasel). Every time gramp, Gilley, and Mike would take the car he would cause all end of fuss. When they finally decided to catch him (traps were no use), he ran through a hole in the firewall out under the hood. They opened the hood and he ran into the horn. He went head first and coildnt turn around so they covered the end, removed the horn, and released him.

Gramps old Colt Army Special service revolver. It has considerable wear but is still a good shooter. It is pictured with his home made holster. Things weren't so "official" back in the day. Gramp had a preference for longer barrels on handguns, as evidenced by the High Standard posted earlier.
Of note, he once shot a bear with this .38. He never thought it underpowered back then.

Figured I'd post a couple more pics. Gram and Gramp and places they stayed. Some of the old warden camps were pretty rough, others fairly nice. The one with them sitting with "Mike" was taken above Northeast Carry, and last I knew, the camp still stands.
An interesting note; the snowshoes seen in some of these pictures with the pom-poms that Gram is holding were a gift to her from a hermit-trapper that liked my grandfather. The webbing is made from caribou hide that was shot in Maine. The caribou have been gone here since before 1900. I still have these, and they are in very nice condition.

Jay,
THATS what I call a post of substance! In fact, I'll go as far as saying it's the best post in the last ten years...or ever here. It sure beats, "what socks do you wear when buying milk and bread?" or "how do I change the sight on my Rossi"? :D

That sure was a time when men were men and women were glad of it. Can you imagine any Hollywood people or for that matter, most anybody today (except Pitchy) enduring the outside elements with a smile on their face? They sure were a different breed. Even Grams is tough...a skirt with bare legs...tough.

People in those days worked all day long, had way less pleasures, lived slower, and for sure, were happier people than today. I can't go 1/2 mile anymore without a Volvo, Mercedes, or a BMW climbing up my azz attempting to make me drive faster.

Good post brother, I'll be sure to keep rereading it.----6

Appreciate the kind words Six but ya give me way to much credit, heck I don`t even walk to the mail box in this cold weather.
Heck Ollogger has to deal with that WY. wind, Nath goes out and hunts in the cold every day, there are a lot of fellars here a lot tougher than I am.
Ron is out cutting wood with his son after having heart and knee surgery, gotta give him a lot of credit.

Another one of the old warden camps. This is many times what greeted them upon arrival and they had to be dug out.
A rare pic of camp "on the trail". Stopping to "boil up" and dry out was a highlight of trail time. Gramp and Gilley were in these camps for the winter with Gram and "Auntie Sneak" staying with them. Their camps were usually miles apart. They were connected sometimes by party phone lines that ran to logging camps. They could talk but the lines were down a lot. They also used to snowshoe miles alone to each others camps for visits. Gramp and Gilley were gone for long stretches patroling or working the huge traplines they ran. One time ,Gram was alone and a bear came in the camp and helped himself to a bunch of supplies. Gram didn't have time to get to a rifle and climbed up in the rafters till he was done.

He did! I have a B&W picture of myself at 17 years old standing in a camp doorway (I've posted it here I think) and I'm wearing it butt forward on the left with a .41 Blackhawk in front.
Gram passed first, at 74, on Halloween 1990 of a heart attack.. Gramp died at 80, in 1994 of pneumonia.
Good folks. I spent a lot of time with them growing up. Miss em both.
Uncle Gilley went in 1998, also at 80. He was an absolute hoot. Used to have breakfast with he and his wife every Sunday. I have some pictures with he and my dad while fishing a couple years before up to some of the areas they patroled. I will see if I can find em.
Matter of fact, I got some fishing pictures of Gramps too! I will dig those out and post some up.

Couple more pics for you guys. Gramp was pretty good with a bow, also. He competed at the state level and placed as high as third. Here he is ready to let one go while Mike makes sure he does it right.
Here is one with a party of hunters he guided. Gramp is sitting on the right. Not sure where this was taken. The guy in the middle he knew, and called him "Greasy Weese". Must have been nice in a small camp :D. The guy on the left I don't have a name for but know he was a bigshot from Washington in the Republican party.
The plane crash I have no info on and would have to research. Doesn't look like it ended well, though.

How about that shooting a long bow left handed and carried his hand gun for a right hand draw.
