Re: Back in the Day/Travels of a Maine Warden
Thanks Pitchy!
Good eye Jerry! I never got to ask him about this. I didn't see the picture till after his death. I suspect the picture is backwards but don't know for sure. I will check with my mom. She may know.

Wonder if it was miss with the bow and get it with the pistol or the other way around.

That's a thought, bud! Although.....Gramp didn't miss often.

Re: Back in the Day/Travels of a Maine Warden
The left handed thing got bugging me. I wondered if the picture was backwards but it isn't. Gramps badge is where it should be.
So, I talked to my dad today and learned something I never knew. Dad told me Gramp was quite ambidextrous, with both pistol and bow, and practiced with both hands often. I never saw Gramp shoot a bow, and only saw him shoot right handed.
When Gramp was older, he lost much of the use of one side from an old hockey injury. This happened before I came along and is the only way I knew him.

Thanks I thought about it when I saw the picture with the bow and the one back a little bit of him sitting in a chair with holster on the right side.

Great pics Jay! ---6
Re: Back in the Day/Travels of a Maine Warden
Thanks guys.
Gramp is pictured here with Bill Turgin, one of the warden pilots from back in the day. Gramp said he had some hairy rides with old Bill and he was a pretty iron nerved customer.
The other pic is Gramp digging out the car in spring. They drove into their district camp in the fall with the car on logging roads. Made a few trips laying in supplies. Depending on where they were, they would be snowed in and went everywhere on snowshoes with dogs pulling moose sleds. In some instances, they used dogsleds. One example was Curly Hamlin, who was a warden northeast of Jackman, at Nine Mile Bridge. There is a book about him (Nine Mile Bridge) written by his wife, Helen. Good read. Gramp knew them both.
This is the last of the "cold weather pictures".

Living in these times of luxuries I must say I think I missed a better time.

Re: Back in the Day/Travels of a Maine Warden
Well, this will be the last of the old pictures I'm going to post. In the spirit of warmer weather, I will leave off with some fishing pics.
Just some of Gram and Gramp with "a few for the pan".
Man, those days are gone!
A pic of Gramp with his 1942 Old Town canvas covered boat and 7.5hp Scott Atwater that he won for a 25 cent raffle ticket. I still have the boat and motor and have included a pic. We fished out of it often when i was a kid. Hasn't been in the water since around 1980. Needs a restoration now but is still in pretty decent shape. Have the original oars and brass oarlocks too.

Thank you Merle. I appreciated everyone's interest and encouragement.
Gramp has been gone for 24 years. Gram for 28. I still feel the loss. I'm sure there were many stories I didn't get.

Probably true for most of us, but at least you got some of them.
Many folks got none.
My paternal grandfather was always distant, and I barely knew him.

That's a good point.
Sorry for the lack of relationship with yours.

Cool pictures again Jay, it`s something you have that boat and I`m sure someday you`ll restore it and go fishing in it again.
Thanks for sharing bud.

Re: Back in the Day/Travels of a Maine Warden
Thanks Lenn. I had a blast fishing in that old boat. It's a beautiful thing and rode really nice.
