Levers on large game

Post by BenT »

Sitting in the stand during deer hunting. I started thinking about the fact that I have never shot a deer with a bolt action rifle. If fact a dozen years ago I put away my main deer slayer and decided to shoot at least one deer with every levergun I have. So lets see your list of guns you have used to harvest large game.

Sixgun won't have a long list , I mean the guy only has Six Guns like his name implies. But that's OK Jack , six guns is better than none. Here is my list.

Win 94 30-30 I bought this gun when I was 13 and was my main gun until I was 30.
Win 94 32 Special
Win 94 375
Win 94 356
Win 71 348

Marlin 444

Other than feral animals after my livestock all I hunt is whitetail, and everything I've used so far shot a 44-45 cal "pistol bullet":

Levers
. Ruger 96/44 (240 grain JSP)
. Marlin 1894 (240 grain JSP)
. Marlin 1894 SS (240 grain JSP)
Bolt
. Ruger 77/44 (240 grain JSP)
Handgun
. Ruger Super Blackhawk (240 grain JSP)
. Ruger Redhawk (240 grain JSP)
Pump
. Mossberg 500 (using saboted slug loads)
Muzzleloader
. Thompson Black Diamond (saboted pistol bullets)
. Thompson Encore (saboted pistol bullets)
. Savage ML-10 (saboted pistol bullets)

Next year I want to step up to a 50 caliber bullet in my Big Horn 89; just didn't get time to work up a load for it this year (factory loads mostly too hot and without proper bullet I think might just destroy meat, so I'm going for hardcast 400 grains or so around 1400 fps).

I own only a few big bore leverguns and they are:
Winchester M92 .357 mag - deer, hogs, varmints
Winchester M1895 .405 Winchester - multiple pronghorn, hogs, exotics, cape buff, warthog,
Winchester M1886 .45-90 - many deer sized exotics, bison, water buff (2) , pronghorn, elephant, leopard, multiple cape buffalo,

When appropriate, I use my scoped bolt guns or .405 double rifle.

I wish that I had time to hunt more with all these guns.

I used a single lever gun in .356Win to hunt large and medium game for about 20 years, and then I decided to see if there were others that worked.

Marlin 336ER - .356Win - Large/Medium
Marlin 1894CS - .357Mag - Small/Medium
Winchester 1894 - .30WCF (mine) - Medium
Winchester 1894 - .30WCF (my Dad's) - Medium
Winchester 1894AE - .356Win - Large/Medium
Marlin 1895 - .45-70Gov - Large/Medium
Marlin 336RC - .35Rem - Medium

I've only hunted white tail extensively, killing bunches of them. I quit counting at 200. I actually started with a Sporterized Springfield in 30-06 which I later re-barreled to 25-06 but when I was 18 or 19 I found a 94 SRC in the corner of a gas station in Gravette Arkansas. Cost me $22.50 and it was a 25-35 with the magazine shortened to only hold 4 rounds with a Pacific receiver sight installed. This was my deer rifle for many years and all 3 of my older boys killed their first deer with it. So:
1894 Winchester SRC 25-35
99F Savage 250-3000
78 Browning 30-06
Browning BLR 308
1886 Winchester 45-70 full magazine, octagon bbl, crescent butt rifle
94 Winchester SRC 30-30
86 Browning SRC 45-70
1886 Winchester 45-90 full magazine, octagon bbl, crescent butt rifle (1916)
Remington Rolling Block chambered to take 45-70 cases (not lever but ?)
1892 Winchester 20" OB rifle 44-40
1892 Winchester 24" OB rifle 32-20
1892 Winchester SRC converted to 357
86 Browning SRC shortened to 17" bbl 45-70
73 Uberti sporting rifle 44-40
I'm probably forgetting something but here's this much.
Forgot about Ruger No.1A 270

Savage 1895 & 99
22-250
243
284
303
300
308
Marlin 336
30-30 & 35 Rem
Winchester 94
25-35
30-30
375

Bolt guns & Ruger NO.1 25-06 - 264-7mm mauser - 7 mag. 300 Win. & 300 H&H - 338win. & 375 H&H also 45-70 , have maybe a half dozen other lever guns I would like to take game with in various chamber sizes but the last couple times I hunted I couldn't get myself to pull the trigger, maybe the rest of the guns will have to be happy killing paper & steel

Hi Ben....your right! Not much of a list. :D You have done well with your assortment of leverguns. Well done!!! :D

7mm mag---2 deer

30-30---2 deer

45-90 1886 Winchester---1 deer

12 ga. Ithaca.---slugs---2 deer

44 Spl. 1950 Target S&W----2 deer

1886 Winchester 33 WCF.--- Tractor trailer load of deer and one elk

Have not killed a deer since 1998....the challenge was gone so I stopped. An old timer told me back in the seventies that when you lose that excitement after killing a deer, it's time to stop. I've never needed deer meat to survive.

I can afford beef....besides, my in-laws are custom butchers.

I LOVE to shoot but I have a different outlook on killing things for the last 20 years or so..... I know it needs to be done but I let others do the work. ---6

I for one don't remember the deer counts for each individual firearm. I've only ever missed one PA. deer season since I started hunting in 1973. (stationed overseas in 83)

Most all my deer have been taken with my Savage model 99C in .308 Win.

Browning BPS 12 GA. (slugs only hunting on the Army Depot)

Winchester model 94 30-30 Win.

Winchester model 70 .243 Win.

Over the past number of years I've been racking up a pretty good deer count with this string flinger.
At my age & stage in life the deer archery season is fast becoming my favorite hunting seasons.
(And then there's Trout season 8) )

Have to think about this for a bit: (Numbers are best guesses on whitetails)
Marlin 1894P .44 Mag: 3 deer
Marlin 336 30-30: 5 deer
Marlin Co-Pilot: 1 Whitetail, 1 Moose
Marlin 1895 Guide Gun: 1 Moose, 1 Bison, 3 whitetails
Styer Model 69 .308: 6 whitetails
AR-10 .308: 4 Whitetail
Guns I killed large game at work with: (25 years in the State Police)(29 years Active ARMY and Guard)
British L1A1 7.62 (Full Auto) 1 Black Bear
M-14 scoped w/suppressor: A few deer on Airport runways
Service revolver/pistol: many whitetail deer that were hit by vehicles
Walther PP .22LR w/suppressor many whitetails hit by vehicles (All after 1981 when I got my first suppressor)
MP-5A3 w/suppressor 6 deer on DNR Crop Damage permits
It is not the critic who counts

My friend Bryan Pettet took a cow Elephant with his .50 Alaskan in 2007. He was on a game-cropping hunt in Zimbabwe. They were cropping the tuskless elephants out of the herd. His was built on a Marlin by Regan Nonneman.

Added:
I have taken Mule Deer and Whitetail with the 30-30 Model 94 ..

Took a zebra in 2007 with the Model 71 .348

I have used 2 Winchester 94s to take deer. My custom heavy barreled 1978 & a mdl 64A; (both in .30-30). But have used several others to take a fair number of coyotes. My favorite being a 1979 carbine that's taken coyotes since it was new. Mostly with handloads with the Sierra 125HP over RL-7, clocking along at ~2500fps. I had always intended to hunt deer with that rifle & load, but never have.

Wildebeest with a Marlin Guide Gun in South Africa.
Water Buffalo hybrid on a game ranch with a Model 92 in .480 Ruger using 400 grain soft point bullets.

Those were the highlights. I got lucky to have the chances to do that.
