I guess you can make about anything work for a barrel if you have a liner....!

I bet a slightly larger diameter would work well for a muzzleloader. Would take a long time to bore and rifle with frontier barrel making tools, most of which were wood. However, the rebar is inexpensive enough that you could mess up a few without breaking the bank.

Most pre Civil War barrels were made of very soft steel.

Because someday it will be the only way to get a 'new' or affordable .22.

" Carbine "Williams made his first guns ( .22s) by hand on the farm. and IIRC used an old solid tractor axle for a barrel

I can see making your own but why do all that work on a piece of stuff steel ? You can buy a 3/4" x 36" drill rod annealed blank for
About $10. About $7 more than rebar at the local big box.

Grizz , google MSC tool ( used to be Enco) 3/4"x36" 01 drill rod $18 . I lied about the price , sorry. I used to get it from Enco much cheaper.
Very nice stuff. I make lots of stuff out of drill rod. It's not full of slag and inclusions and hard spots like rebar or even hot roll.
Cold roll is not bad but has stress in it and if the hole is not drilled exactly in the center it will warp on you and be useless for a gun barrel. The bullet will make it through but you could shoot around corners.

I use this place only because when you get into the more expensive stuff if you only need 34" or 38" you can order that length or just an inch more length. http://www.speedymetals.com/p-47-40r75.aspx

Guys, tThanks very much for the links. Will archive those.

I think I recently paid 23$ for .75 X 36 drill rod. got it to make non-rebar rebar knives, but no time to forge yet.
