Missouri Deer!

Post by rbertalotto »

A wonderful day of hunting today out here in Missouri. This year has been extremely discouraging. Usually we are seeing literally hundreds of deer in the week with lots of nice bucks. This year we are seeing nearly nothing. Some of the hunters in camp have not seen a deer! In Missouri you can only shoot an 8 point buck or better. So it's hard as you need to count points before you can shoot. Tonight is my last day of hunting. Went to church this AM and didn't get into the woods until late afternoon. Actually took my Ipad and a HotSpot to my stand to watch the Patriots dominate the Raiders! While in my stand I had three bucks wander by. I let the first one pass as I said I'd leave it for my hunting buddy who hasn't seen anything. The next one was a bit far away and I could clearly see if it was 8 points. The last one showed up 15 minutes to no hunting time. I photographed it a dozen times as I didn't think it had the correct number of points. The final photograph with a telephoto lens confirmed it was indeed 8 points....By now it was some 127 yards away and moving into the woods. Now or never...One shot with a 270 Winchester and venison is in the freezer!

Here he is just before I decided he was good enough to take....Last day deer!

In Texas, that would be on overgrown monster with shrunken antlers. The anemic border collie sized deer here in Texas are bred for antler mass the size of the deer. Well, almost. The deer down here are much smaller than those in Missouri and Northeast Kansas.
Congratulations on a nice deer! Hope it tastes great.

Fine looking buck. Here in Arkansaw we have a four point rule for a legal buck.

Nice deer. Can we assume that .270 was in a model 95?

What is the reason for the decline in deer population?
