Lever Envy......

Post by AJMD429 »

I didn't have the money, but someone who is a nice guy, husband, and father, wanted to start hunting deer, so I bought him a CVA 44 Mag break open rifle.

We sighted it in today with PrviPartizan 300 gr flatpoints....5 shots were always in 2" at 100 yards.

I wish any of my lever action 44 Mags were that accurate... :(

I told him a miss will definitely not be the guns fault (at least I can use that excuse...)... :D

Not only added to the family, but may have provided meals for years to come. What's that old line about teaching some one to fish. Applies to hunting as well.

I did that for my Preacher's left handed yoot. They were having an awful time finding a decent left handed deer gun for a smallish Jr-hi kid, so I handed him my H&R Handi in .30-30. His dad made him "pay for it" (in monthly sums from his chore/paper route money) but he got a nice little lefty friendly deer gun for way under book...

Good on you 8)

(I was always a little disappointed in my early 70s 1894's accuracy. It's about minute of dinner plate at 100 yards...The early 70s .444, however, is outstanding)

Last year he spent many hours afield, saw several deer, and had the self-control to turn down marginal shots, so I figured he had the makings of a true hunter. Thus the firearm gift this year.

He already put it to good use....

After a mere two hours in the deerstand this year....!

The shot went through lung, heart, and liver, so was pretty effective...!

Good for you Doc for furthering our great sport.

I have yet to shoot a 44 mag levergun or talk to an owner of one that was consistently accurate that would shoot under 2".

If you look at the specs on your donor rifle you will see it has a 1-20 twist...the way they should be.---6

Yep. My leverguns in 44 Mag and 45 Colt all have HUGE chambers, too... I know that's "within spec", but when the cases come out looking like little fat beer-kegs, that can't help accuracy. The CVA ones come out looking like never-fired, straight walled cases, more like my Ruger 77/44 ones.
