Reno Gun Show- No Guns Allowed In

#1 Post by Shasta » Sun Nov 12, 2017 1:59 pm

Well, it's a first for me... Some friends and I drove to Reno last Friday for the Big Reno Gun Show at the Grand Hotel and we were not allowed to take in any guns or knives! They even used a metal detector wand on everyone coming in the door! It seems that after the Las Vegas incident they don't want to take any chances or upset the tourists.
We traditionally go to the buffet and get breakfast as soon as we arrive, but guess what? Another big surprise, the buffet no longer serves breakfast and was closed. The small restaurant inside the casino was very crowded, so we just went without breakfast and headed straight to the gun show.
It was quite a circus! For those who bought a gun from a dealer, the security guards at the door wrapped the gun up in black plastic and taped it before allowing it out, and you had to exit through the back door rather than passing through the casino to the front door. Even more ridiculous, we stocked up on .22 LR ammo, and when we left they made us go out the back door with that too! It made for a very long walk to our truck that was parked in the lot out front, especially since we had to make several trips to get out everything we bought. There was a lot of talk that the Big Reno Show will have to find a more friendly venue in the future.

All that aside, the show was not as crowded as usual and there were quite a few empty tables because for some reason they scheduled the Reno show on the same weekend as the Tulsa show, and many of the dealers were there instead. There were EBR (Evil Black Rifle) dealers in abundance, and I saw a lot of very high priced leverguns too. I was disappointed to find that there were few bullet moulds for sale, so I guess I'll just order the two I need from Midway.
It was not a wasted trip though as I was able to find something I have been looking for for some time, a Redfield 80 no-drill target receiver sight complete with mounting screw for my 1898 Springfield Krag rifle. I also picked up a half dozen of those powerful mini LED flashlights (I seem to be constantly losing them) and I got 5,000 Winchester Small Pistol primers for a good price.

At lunchtime we went downstairs to a hamburger joint called Johnny Rocket's. The bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and Coke I had were unremarkable and far too expensive, but the gorgeous dark haired waitress that waited on us made it all worthwhile!

I remember going to the Reno show back in the late 1980's - early 1990's when that hotel was still the Reno HIlton. That was a REAL gun show back then. I remember seeing people walking onto the casino floor to show off what they had bought to friends, then the security politely coming over, and asking them to please not bring firearms onto the floor. Whole different attitude back then.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I don't know why you are complaining......at least now we can all rest secure in the knowledge that nobody will carry out any mass-murder schemes in that place again, right....?

.....right....????

.....maybe....?????

I noticed that the gal from Cody Firearms museum posted she was going to be in Reno instead of Tulsa. There are casinos in Tulsa too! :D

Tulsa was packed, but not as bad as I've seen it. Powder and .22LR were finally closer to a reasonable price.

I came home with more guns than I left with, which was not my goal. But stuff happens

Just heard back. All the casino. Not the city. It’s private property. They can do what they want. Likely to be the last one at that location.

I’d guess the lawyers are the cause.

We drove over 200 miles to get there, and that included a near catastrophic encounter with black ice that sent the truck sliding sideways off the highway and out through the sagebrush. Thankfully it stayed on its wheels and somehow missed the trees. We did have to change out a tire that got a broken bead. That was way more excitement than this old guy needed! No, we weren't about to turn back after going to that much trouble to get there.

Fortunately I have a friend who had tables there and warned me of the change by the Grande Sierra of no guns allowed to be brought in by the public. That made the decision to skip this show easy, so I stayed home. I also knew the Tulsa gun show conflicted with it, and many dealers of old guns told me they were going to Tulsa, and skipping Reno.
Since both Tulsa and Reno are scheduled at least a year ahead (or more!) I can't understand why Lou Fascio jr. didn't change the venue date sooner? Going on the same date as Tulsa is a death sentence, as anyone who buys or sells a lot will always choose Tulsa. If he doesn't change the venue to another building, he'll end up losing even more dealers and buyers at the next show. Most wouldn't have showed up this time if they'd known about the hotel's policy of not allowing guns in. We've always parked out back and come up the escalator with guns. It's where the gun check area is, so never thought of coming through the lobby or casino with guns.

Got some more info on this story, as we had our monthly Historical Arms Collectors dinner on Friday. One of our members had tables at Reno and handed out copies of the "rules" that Lou Fascio gave vendors. One rule in particular was not enforced, as it would be impossible to do so on the spot. That rule was for every table holder to have liability insurance! Another rule beyond the guns not allowed in was edged weapons, and even pocket knives were treated the same way as guns! People entering were wanded to check for knives, and even the smallest pocket knives were not allowed into the show! One person told security to "toss it in the garbage" but they refused. Said he'd need to leave the line and go take it to his car, or toss it in the garbage himself! Knives purchased were treated like guns, and bagged and taped shut, then required to be taken out the back entry!
It was also revealed that the hotel wanted Lou Fascio to change weekends, and he chose to put the show on the same weekend as Tulsa! The hotel also paid him $15,000 to change the date, so a big win for him, and a big loss to table holders! Additionally he knew 3 weeks ahead of the hotel's policy change on bringing guns and knives into the venue, but did not let vendors know, as many would probably dropped their tables! I heard many left Sat. night anyway, and did not return for Sun. show.
And if all this wasn't enough trouble, Fascio added one more to the mix! Any table holders with less than 4 tables were not allowed to set up on Wednesday! No warning on this either, so there was a long line of folks with all their guns on carts turned away Wed. and had to go load them back into their vehicles!
Sounds like a total cluster from start to finish, and many have said they wont go back, regardless of what happens next year!

Ammo and gun purchases were not allowed to leave at the same time! Regardless of whether the ammo was correct for the gun purchased! So two trips for anyone purchasing ammo and a gun! And if a buyer bought multiple boxes of ammo, they were required to take them out in multiple trips too!

And to make matters worse, my Reno Gun Show trek turned out worse for me than I knew. I had a .405 caliber 1895 Winchester limited edition rifle in a soft case in the back of the truck. As I said before, we hit a patch of black ice and took a wild ride off the road. We did make it safely to Reno after that, but I didn't get to take the rifle into the show, so did not know until going to a local show yesterday that the rifle's buttstock received a huge crack right down the middle from that ice incident. As my wife said, better the gun stock damaged than me! Sure hope I can repair it. A new stock would be very expensive.
