Veterans Day

Post by ole pizen slinger »

To All Who Served,
Thank you for your service, suffering, and sacrifice in my behalf. I am unworthy of the devotion freely given to me and my heirs. I have not always appreciated the freedom you bought, have not always honored your service, have not cherished your suffering, and have not always sorrowed at your death. I do the best I can to carry on your traditions and value the freedoms I enjoy. A sincere THANK YOU to all who saluted the flag, served under the flag, and had their coffin draped by the flag. May God bless you all.
OPS.

Remembrance Day, 2017

My grandfather was in France in 1917, 100 years ago.

The other grandfather's brother had a son shot dead in WW1, aged 19 years.

It's a bit personal if you know what I mean.

Thanks to all vets, especially those who stood to the right and left of me. If you're a vet, you understand.

Someone mentioned their grandfather's service in WWI.

How many remember that was originally Armistice day?

How many remember that WWI didn't end on Armistice day?

How many know that WWI actually ended in 2010?

As to my grandfather's service in WWI, one was in the Atlantic chasing submarines. The other died in Europe but didn't know it. Mustard gas, then catching the Spanish Flu. He died at Ft. Leavenworth.

My 20 years were easy compared to my Uncle Mac...he was at The Bulge. He got a Bronze Star for it.

How the New York Times has changed.... :(

Thankfully all of the Real People still share that respect for soldiers, even if the NYT no longer does.

One Great Uncle was a doughboy in the Great War. I have his uniform. One Uncle was infantry in the 2nd Armored Division and was there from North Africa all the way to the Battle of the Bulge. Silver Star, Bronze Star with V device. Blaine's Uncle Mac would have had the same V device. It stands for Valor. A Bronze Star without it can be given to themselves by O-3 or above for being in a combat theater even when they are a non-combatant. The V device is awarded by the others in your unit for you doing something exceptional. He also had several Purple Hearts, and had shell splinters in him to the day he died. My Uncle was most proud of giving away his points earned in battle to the married men of his unit so that they could go home alive. He gave away enough points to rotate about a dozen men home.
Another Uncle flew B24 model J Liberator bombers in the South Pacific. Uncle Cecil named his plane "My Aching Back". That seemed to be a common name for the B24. He had a lot of repairs done on that plane due to battle damage. It got him back to base every time. One of the islands he was on was Fiji, and cannibalism was still legal there during WWII. They were armed wherever they went.
My Dad volunteered for the Air Force in 1951. He ended up in Germany for 4 years. He volunteered with the intent of being a jet mechanic in Korea, but he was sent to Germany.
My Brothers and I all served in the Army. 2 brothers retired.
A younger Cousin volunteered and was a Ranger stationed at Ft. Lewis and spent 2 tours in Iraq and 3 in Afghanistan. He got out as E6 promotable. What all medals he was awarded, I don't know. He does have a couple of purple hearts. Some places are dangerous.
