One of the new Winchester ‘92’s report..

Post by hightime »

I was looking for a 92 in a 357 mag for a while. I figured I would someday get a Italian or Brazilian model. A Japanese one came up at a gun shop a few miles away. Looked unfired to me but no box for $800. As it happened the wife called and asked if she could get a piano. Well I got the gun and it only cost me $3,200. Not that bad from a guy who has been married for 47years.
Anyway I’d like to report it’s a winner. With a slightly toned down loads it shoots 3” groups at 100 yds bench rest with buck horns. Works for me. I’m going to put it to work here in Northern MN in a couple weeks for whitetail.

Thank you for that info... been looking at those Jap-chesters and wondering about the 357's... Was that shooting done with any 180 grainers ?

I’m using 158 grr jacketed hollow points because I have a lot of them. I have only tried 2400 for powder, but very pleased with the loads as compared with Winchester ammo.

We'll need photographic documentation, I'm afraid. 8)
Recently added a Winchester/Miroku 1873 short rifle in .44 WCF to my gun safe and hope to get it to the range soon. Nicely put together.

Ok I'll be the one who starts it again this year. Don't you know that rifle will never work on a whitetail? If 30-30's bounce off of today's modern deer, like the general population believes, then surely that little 357 couldn't possibly kill a deer. You need the 600whizbangsupermagnumdeerassasain AT A MINIMUM and shots no less than 3/4 of a mile in a hurrican are allowed. Sheesh new guys.
P.s. love both my 357 Marlin and 16 inch Rossi.

Well, it’s down to the wire. Leaving this afternoon for the whitetail hunt. Am I really going to use the 357? Well yes and no. I’m also bringing my 94 ae 30-30 with a 3x Weaver. At 68 I’m not that sure of my eyes.
I have shot a small buck with 357 before, so I’m pretty sure of that out to 80 yards or so. All we ever have in my neck of the woods is close shots.

You can't hit out past 25 yards with a 16" barrel, although it doesn't matter, cuz you lose so much velocity it wouldn't kill a deer anyway.

BTW, did I tell you about the friend of mine who uses a Contender pistol to hunt deer...? It's chambered in 357 Mag, and he shoots 2" groups at 100 yards.....but.....that's because......his has a SCOPE :D

Well it works. Very close shot. Had to steer the bullet thru tight trees, but clean kill..

Thanks. Levergun with open sights, life is good. My grandson was there too, and he shot the doe and fawn.
