Belt buckle pistol

Post by Pitchy »

In 1959 I was 5 years old, laying on the sofa with the measles sick as heck and my dad brought me this belt buckle pistol (we got along pretty good back then )
Still have it, they were made in that year I believe, boy does time fly.

It had some plastic bullets that went in it, can`t remember if they went bang or not.
Ya wear it as a belt buckle, safety on the bottom breath out and it swings out and fires.

Yup shootin shells or at least mine shot them. A spring was in the case and you pushed the bullet into the case, compressing the spring. The impact of the hammer released the spring and sent the plastic bullet flying. You could put sticky caps on the base of the case so it did go bang, if you wanted. I loved them but my mom didn't when it went to vacuuming. Oh yeah, the cat didn't like them either  I had the derringer and the revolver that shot them.

It was cool to see one of those again. The revolver that shot them was a later evolution of the fanner fifty. Now I miss mine  I had a crude copy of a civil war musket that shot ~3/8" round cork from the explosion of the cap. Surprisingly that cork left the barrel at a pretty good clip; at least as fast as the Matel shootin shells. Of course there was no weight to the projectile. Cat didn't like that one either. I didn't have that good of a day today but your post cheered me right up, thanks.

That's real nice to have it this long. In 1959 I was 21 years old, I bought a new Ruger 44 mag Blackhawk,a S&W model 10 4 inch 38 special and Colt SAA 5 1/2 inch .45 Colt. That was a good year. I do have a Justin belt buckle that my brother bought me for my birthday in 1962 that I still wear everyday.

That's cool bud! I've never seen one of those. I had an M1 Garand that you loaded plastic bullets into with caps. When you pulled the trigger the bolt went forward anf fired the cap/shot the bullet.
Still got the M1, but no bullets for it.

Thanks for the great replies, Leverluver those were neat videos, yep that`s how they work alright.
AJMD429,I had one of those when they first came out, was logging one winter and it fell out of the buckle.
Found it in the spring in a field where I was piling the logs not a scratch on it, lucky.

I had the fanner 50 and this was the belt buckle on the leather holster rig. the derringer detached as well. you could push a release and the derringer swung forward and fired. the cartiridges were spring loaded and propelled the plastic bullet quite well. you could put stick on caps on the base of the shell for the noise and smoke. I had a rolling block carbine that came with the set.

best shot with the derringer was when my younger brother shot at me with the carbine and I snapped a shot off at him with the derringer; dropped him like a rock because it him him in the eye and he screamed. ....and I got whomped by my parents. they wouldn't believe it was self defense !

That's cool Pitchy! I had one too and the Fanner 50 handgun that shot the same cartridges. If I remember correctly, the caps that went on the end of the cartridge was called a Greenie stickum cap

Yup, Mattel Shootin' Shells with Greenie Stickum Caps. I had that belt buckle derringer, too, Pitchy, and the Dick Tracy .38:

Mattel also made "SNUB NOSE 38" that had the "shootin shells" and shoulder holster rig which I still have along with box (no display insert though) I think I got it for Christmas in '61. One of the neighbor kids had a rolling block that also shot the same shells.

We enjoyed shooting our Daisy BB guns at each other too, but never shot our eyes out.

I was a kid in the 70's and that sure sounds like the setup I had one Christmas. What I REMEBER as a model 94 Winchester and a SAA chrome that shot the push in plastic bullets out of chrome(stainless?) Cases. Hey I just realized my being like this ain't my fault Mom and Dad( with a little help from JW, Lone Ranger, and Roy Rogers) made me like this. Hot darn.
I also had a bb gun. My 48 year old brother( the Department of Justice prosecutor) to this day walks around with a bb in his thigh. Told me I wouldn't shoot him cause he would tell Mom. He was wrong and I could sit down again by age 10. Wow! DAD WAS PISSSSSSEEEEDDD.

 If the kid next door got cool toys, I got to play with the box they came in. Not much Christmas went on around my place, except for lots of clothes so mom didn't have to buy them...Always 2 sizes big

Got me to thinking about roll caps, and how much fun it was to set off an entire roll at once with a hammer.

That got boring in a hurry and we moved on to setting off a whole box at a time with a sledge hammer.
