Scouting for Deer -- Found Squirrels Instead...

Post by Old No7 »

Not the first time I've been out after deer and seen or heard only squirrels........

But this time, it was a week before the deer season opener, and unknown to the squirrels I was carrying a 20 ga side-by-side shotgun instead of a deer rifle. (That's a "Dickinson Estate" 20ga, 28" bbl, double-trigger, as sold by Cabela's.)

These photo's aren't as nice as the ones our friend Nath would take, and I missed the opportunity to put the 2 squirrels together in one pix later that morning... But I did get them into the same stew pot later that day.

All in all, it was a beautiful day out in the fall woods of Maine -- much too warm for deer hunting though -- as it was almost 70 degrees by 11AM...

Sure hope it gets a little c-c-c-colder soon!

Cheers!

The squirrels knew that only a nut would be out there with a shotgun. They were not worried about a nut. You know that squirrels like nuts. :D.

Those look like they would have been good to eat.

That is a real fine looking double gun. Bet it works good on grouse and woodcock too. I have a LeFever 20 gauge double that my wife bought for me in 1961.

How do you like that Dickinson?
I was drooling over those at Cabelas the other day. I would sure like to have a fine 16 gauge SxS.

So... Now that you've been out there shooting, do you think you'll see any deer next week?

I'm liking that Dickinson! I checked my local Cabelas and they have 12's & 20's in stock but not a 28- that's probably a good thing or I'd be going there to get it!

Sure does -- it handles great, and the trigger pulls are sweet too (my older CZ Bobwhite had pulls 1.5X the weight of the gun).

Actually - one of my best 'deer-stands' is just sitting at my usual shooting-bench at the range behind my house. The deer are so used to shooting back there that they don't seem to care.

:( Washington has no squill season. When I was stationed at Ft Ben Harrison, Indiana had a long and bountiful squill season. I'd rather hunt squills than deer.

I've been Jonesing for a double 20. Every time I go to Cabelas I have to put my hands on one. 20 ga, 28", straight stock.

My first shotgun was a FIE double barrel 20 gauge made in Boito Brazil. I killed quite a few pheasant with that gun. Side by side guns are sure nice.
