I always respond with the oldie, "I have more than I need, but not as many as I want". At least that is what I tell my wife and job. Maybe some friends who ask rhetorically.

For anyone else, it's either "my rights are not subject to someone else's interpretation of my needs", or...

"None of you f***ing business!"

I knew I had it bad, when I realized that ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE GUN-STORE, my driving musings would be along the lines of "....now that I got this one, what's the NEXT one I need to get....?????"

I hadn't even got home with the new toy, and hadn't even shot it yet.... :|

Also - as I kid, I'd read Mel Tappan's "Survival Guns", and think what the SIX guns I really had to have were. . . .

Then a few years later, I had all those six.

Then I started thinking TEN would be a better number, but - what the heck, just go with TWELVE....!!!

Then when you have kids, you start thinking things like "Well, every kid should have a Ruger 10.22..."

Then you start appreciating leverguns, and thinking "Every kid should have a lever action 357 Mag....

.... then of course they have to have a revolver to go with it...."

It only gets worse........

When my wife asked me how many guns were enough, I asked her: "How many pairs of shoes are enough?" That is a legitimate question, isn't it?

All of them.

Fact is, my family's common bond is guns. All if us have different ways if making a living, different interests and likes. But......we all are into guns. All three boys have different gun interests, so naturally, it is up to me to have a supply if each type so I can "keep in touch" with my sons.
So.....buying more guns means I'm a good father. :D

And THAT'S how it's done.

How many different kinds of tools does a mechanic need? How many different pots, pans, knives, spatulas, spoons, Et C. does a kitchen need? Need is sometimes to be determined after circumstances dictate the need.

Considering what some women spend on shoes, it is more than fair. Because you know they will wear out, or go out of style. A gun rarely does the former (if properly maintained), and NEVER does the latter!

Fortunately, Mrs. YK is not that into shoes (though she must have 25x the number I have, but I have few). On the other hand, she does like jewelry...

Yep, right on YK! Duh, what was I thinking. LOL. I'm kinda in the same boat as you maybe with shoes. The other day I realized I've been wearing the same pair of shoes to work DAILY since December 2006. Now that's pretty good mileage!

I find it odd that some folks actually count their firearms.

:o
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Records are important. They're all documented and on "the list"... Somewhere.

I'm just not certain exactly how long the list is.

I was told early on that I should pick a caliber, buy it then buy one size down one size up until I had them all! Same for shotguns and pistols!

I'm kind of a minimalist and am always trying to lower the count, towards some small collection of Perfect Pieces. I never quite find them, it seems. I figure a large and a small rifle plus a single revolver is ideal. I'm getting closer; maybe someday...

I remember reading (and I think I still have a copy somewhere) Mel Tappan's "Survival Guns". I think it is a good concept (a 'minimalist' battery of the basic firearms one would need to cover all needs, from recreation to hunting, to apocalyptic scenarios. His premise was that the list(s) need not be mutually exclusive.
