Mom Is**NOT** Fading Away QUITE YET

Post by Blaine »

She's 92 and not doing very good at all. She's been in a retirement home for almost 3 years, and every bout of pneumonia leaves her more ragged, worn out and brain-fried. She got out of re-hab about a couple weeks ago and needed a 24/7 watcher. If she doesn't pull out of it today or tomorrow she'll go into assisted living.
This may sound horrible, but I wish she would either recover to a point of living a happy life, or that the Lord will call her home before she suffers any longer.
Personally, I would avoid lingering like that if possible.
If you have any good thoughts and prayers about one way or the other, please do.

Hoping for the best for her Blaine. It's so tough to lose them but watching them suffer is worse I think.

We'll be thinking about you!

Prayers up for you and yours.

You're going through one of the hardest things a child can go through.

Be well.

Actually, I'm ok. I look at this as the natural way of things. My sis who is in charge of this (2500 miles away) I think is trying to hang on a little too much. For me, it would be a mercy to go home before all the intensive care is necessary. Honest, I'm not hard-hearted, just realistic. Death & Taxes...ya know?

"...This may sound horrible, but I wish she would either recover to a point of living a happy life, or that the Lord will call her home before she suffers any longer...."

Not at all. It is likely what she wishes for as well.

It is what many of my patients pray for, and sometimes they ask me to be 'less aggressive' to facilitate a death with dignity and comfort, instead of prolonged misery.

Of course I am at best God's 'instrument', and at worse, Satan's, so I tell them all I can do is MY best, to provide a path to recovery; whether God takes them 'home' instead of my path, is not my choice.

Bottom line: you're not wrong to have those thoughts.

Just be there for support and tell her the most important thing a mom wants to hear: "You did a good job; raised good kids, left the world better because of it." (hopefully she doesn't regard you as too much the exception to that narrative... :D ).

Boy, Blaine, I have been here, done this, and I agree that if the good Lord wants her home, let it be sooner than later.
I have watched this unfold in my own family, including my own mom taking 12 YEARS to die of Alzheimer's, and my Dad "intubated" for two weeks before it dawned on us to let him pass. He did so almost immediately with I believe, joy and alacrity, wanting to be done with this life and be in the presence of his beloved Messiah. The transition is peaceful and effortless for those who are leaving; it's only hard for those of us left behind.
Prayers for you, friend.

Blaine, prayers up for your Mom, you and your sister, and your family.

I'm with you; I hope I never end up in a nursing home. I'd rather go out quick and fighting...

Well, she's perked up considerable. Not close to being well, of course, but better. She's still headed to the assisted living wing (which is going to go over like a turd in the punchbowl). That Old Lady has more lives than a cat. :) :)

Blaine, if she has some quality time left -- and you can spend some of it with her -- it's surely a blessing.
