"Oversexed, Overpaid and Over Here"

Post by Old No7 »

I've had the pleasure of meeting 3 English lasses -- ladies, when I met them -- who had all worked in Spitfire factories during World War II. How I wish now that I had asked them more questions about their work assignments and experiences back then, but I do recall one having a beautiful oil painting of a Spitfire hanging in a place of honor in her living room. Sadly, they are all gone now...

Each of them would mention the above phrase at some point when they were talking about all the Americans over in England during the "Friendly Invasion" (see picture below); and indeed, each became a "War Bride" and settled over here after the war, where I eventually met them decades later.

What I never knew until today, was how the American airmen or GI's responded back to the Brits when hit with the phrase:

"You're oversexed, overpaid and over here!"

They would simply reply back calling the Brits:

"Underpaid, undersexed and under Eisenhower!"

Allies or not, I'm sure that started more than a few friendly fist fights...

Cheers!

The " friendly invasion " was much more preferably to a " Nazi invasion " for which I will always be extremely grateful.
Great Britain had put up with bombing, food rationing and the loss of a lot of young men, when the American troops arrived it must have hit home how hard things here really were.
I'd like to say, a big thank you to ALL the Oversexed, Overpaid and Over Here "Yanks", a lot of which paid the ultimate price fighting for freedom.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

My dad was one of the "overs". Then they added one more. Over the channel. And eventually, over the Rhine. A lot of those that went over the channel didn't make it over the Rhine.

My uncle was one as well. He made it home. Like you said, many paid the full price to defend freedom for us and others.

John, we appreciate the appreciation. We all stand together. I hope it will ever be that way!

Well, we did have sort of a rocky start. But things eventually got better.
