Widow makers
Well fellars I`m happy to still be here today, we have been hitting the woods heavy of late falling trees well today I got hit by a widow maker that I thought killed me.
Thought my head was busted open and it was all over, luckily the branch that Satan picked out missed me and a smaller one hit me and I`m still here.
From now on this will be what I`ll be wearing, beer is in celebration that I`m here with you.

I've always said, hope it's a quick kill or good scare! Cuz I don't want to linger, glad you able to celebrate the latter! Todd3/leg

Re: Widow makers
No joke man.
One of the members at my church quite literally got spiked from top of skull to breastbone.
The service was Closed Casket.
He was only in his early 50s.

Re: Widow makers
Glad your ok!!
I got hammered bad one time right up the side of my face, right below the hard hat, speared 2 times, one limb
the diameter of a 50 cent piece went right through my fore arm, it was bout 5 feet long with bout a foot sticking
through, worst thing was I had to pull it out to get in my pick up to drive to town to see the Doc
be careful out there & wear your saw chaps, don't ask why I always wear mine
Brad

Re: Widow makers
Wow! Glad you're ok Pitchy. You role the dice every time you work in the woods. Cemetaries around here are full of those whose luck ran out.
Stay safe, my friend.

Re: Widow makers
Glad you are okay Lenn, there are a lot of Beech trees near where I live and they often drop widow makers, pays to be careful in the woods.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.
Re: Widow makers
Thanks guys appreciate it, that was the first time I`ve got hit and it hurt alright but could of been worse as Ollogger pointed out.
Been falling trees for over 40 years and never got hurt, plus running a sawmill for the same amount of time almost.
See Six Satan dropped a bigger branch but my Guardian Angel protected me and just let me get hit by a smaller branch to teach me a lesson to wear a hard hat.
Heading back out there after breakfast to cut a few more down, can`t ever have enough fire wood.
Cheers fellars.

Re: Widow makers
Glad to hear you came through ok Pitchy! I've had a few friends killed on the fire line by snags and such, came all to close once myself, only ended up with a broken collar bone but these close calls can certainly make you pucker some. Stay safe folks.

Re: Widow makers
Glad you aren't any worse than you are. It could have been a lot more than bumps and bruises and a sore head and neck. A friend of my Dad's who worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company would cut down trees and remove dead limbs on the weekends. In the late 70s, if I remember correctly, he was knocked out of a tree by a falling branch and was left a quadriplegic. He had been quite athletic, a former golden gloves boxer, and it left him worse than just paralyzed. He did not want to live that way. I know you respect the trees for having the weight and size to hurt you. Those who don't respect them get hurt early on. I have only done a little bit of cutting on trees, and mostly on small stuff, so my experience is limited. I still get out of the way when I see someone who appears to think being able to start a chainsaw automatically makes them an expert.

Re: Widow makers
Just a thought Pitchy, after All of My eye cataract surgery and related problems and no longer wearing glasses I found myself at a hard place with no eye protection when cutting wood. tried goggles and different glasses but finally bought one of the professional all in one helmet, earmuff, visor units. the metal mesh face shield stops wood chips well away from your face. Stihl, Husky and Echo all sell them. Stay safe old Pard. .
Re: Widow makers
Thanks Grizz and 45Colt, ya should wear all that gear but never have, should wear a motorcycle helmet to but don`t most the time.
