As impressive as the loco looks in the video, it really doesn't do 3751 justice. That engine is flat beyond impressive in person.

Those tea kettles delivered nearly 4000 hp. The thermal efficiency would have been around 6%, so call it a 60,000 hp firebox.

UP is returning a 4-8-8-4 to service, about 7000 hp.

3751 overnighted at the rail yards in Vernon California on this trip. Somewhere I've got some photos takes as she sat. Sadly I could not get as close as I would have liked.

After the run to San Bernadino she went over Cajon Pass. I've never found any video on line of that trip, but you can find quite a few, short, clips of the May 14,2012 crossing.

53-54-ish, Mom took infant sis and I on one of the last steam runs between Columbus, Ohio and Cambridge, Ohio. I don't remember everything, but the sounds, smells, and the big, Black Porter have always been stuck in my memory. The Porter was kinds to me. Bringing me water and a couple snacks.

That's one amazing locomotive, I'm lucky enough to live near a private Steam Railway ( Watercress Line ) but would love to see THAT engine for real.....

Another of the big ones UP 4014 was on static display from 1962 to 2013 at the L. A. County Fair grounds. In 2013 they laid some temporary track and hauled it back to an active line. She was taken up to the shops in Wyoming to be overhauled and returned to operating condition. It was amazing that after all those decades of just sitting that anything moved, but with a some hard work before hand, move she did.

I was amazed how clean it ran. None of the usual smoke. I know it was diesel, but even those had dirty exhaust.

I love those old engines. When I was a boy back in the 50's my Mom would put me on the train in Buffalo NY to go to my Aunt Mag's for a couple weeks in the summer. They were steam loco's and it took a couple hours to get to my Aunt's house in Bingham Pennsylvania. Her house was like 25' from the 2 track line and the telegraphers shack was on the other side of the track from her home. They would stop the train to let me off and when it was time to go home my Aunt would go across to the telegrapher and have them stop the train for my return trip. I loved watching the steam train go through every day and when they'd put a diesel on the siding to let another pass I'd go bug the engineers and fireman to show me the cab and engine. I have many fond memories of those days.

These engines aren't running their original burners. They've all been retrofitted with ones that burn much cleaner, but don't put out quite the BTU's. Loss of BTU's is no big deal as they are hauling long lines of passenger and / or freight cars anymore.

In addition, the fuel they burn is better blended and refined to lower the smoke created.

Last refinery I worked at we sold most of our diesel to the railroad. The specs were completely different than that for marine or vehicle use. And, there are diesels required in some places for stationary engines that are ultra low sulfur and other emissions.

Every time I hear a steam engine I'm reminded of a guy by the name of Wes Harrison, aka Mr Sound Effects. He did an amazing steam engine with just his mouth/throat!
