Gun Values online?

Post by Ji in Hawaii »

Aloha gentlemen, long time no see.

After 51 years I am putting the old homestead up for sale. My dad left it to all siblings to fight over, and the time came, and the fighting started so time to sell. Anyways I need to get a decent appraisal of my firearms both for selling purposes and insurance purposes. I'm in no position to pay to have my guns appraised by a professional so I was wondering if there is a website you guys could recommend that'll let me punch in some figures to get a guesstimate of value. I'm moving to a smaller place and no longer have room for all of them so will have to thin the herd, but also I need to insure the rest. Insurance company will take my word for it but I don't want to go too high or my rates are higher but too low and I won't get reimbursed enough should I need to (Fire, theft, etc). Your help is appreciate.

Mahalo a nui loa, Ji

Blue Book has a web page but you have to pay (I dont know how much). You could try looking on Gunbroker or similar auction sites for guns similar (same type and as close as you can get to the serial # range on older stuff) and like condition as your own. It'd be a rough guess but that would be a fair representation of what they are worth on the market right now.

That's a good start. But, to get a true picture of just what they will sell for, log on to the site. Then go to Advanced search and click on the Completed Items tab. Then plug in your gun info. When it goes to the list you will be looking for the ones that actually sold. These will be any that have at least one bid on them and aren't reserve auctions. Now you will see what someone actually paid for that gun. Add in some transfer fees too.

The suggestion to look at online auction sites is best! Especially to look at "completed auctions" to see if the guns actually sold, and for how much. Looking at asking prices isn't very accurate.

I don't have anything to add to the sale price advice above.

My Dad's family got to fighting over the sharing of the old homestead left to them by their Mother in her will. The fighting was so bad that 2 of them forced a sale. Oklahoma law on property left in a will covered that. 2 of the children of one of Dad's sister had inherited shares after her death. They went to court to try to prevent the sale. They failed due to having no legal grounds on which to base their argument. They are still bitter about it. I have seen the situation which you are in. I hope your family can get over their fighting and move on with their lives faster than my Dad's family did. You have my support. I will be praying for you.

Nate and Marlinman have the right idea on using the "Gunbroker" completed items search. When I do that I like to go ahead and sort by "highest number of bids first" because that will start your list with items that got bid on and you can stop looking when you get to items that closed without ever getting a bid.

Good luck Ji!

Thanks for the great suggestions, the Gunbroker completed sales helped on most of my guns .The one exception was "Smelly Nelly" my Gibbs Frontier Summit rifle my sporterized Enfield SMLE rebarreled to 45/70. I guess too unique a gun that sales are too few and far between. I completed one locker of guns, and now I go into my WWII vintage guns my Type99 Arisaka, 1903 Springfield, 1916 Spanish Mauser, etc. etc. which may be a tad harder to get prices on.

As far as the old homestead is concerned this old saying applies well- "You can pick your friends but you can't pick family". When two of my sisters found out how much the property is now worth they became sharks smelling blood. I already agreed to vacate the premises during this summer 10 years ago but they gave me less than 2 weeks to vacate last month. I told them their demands were unreasonable, and to cool off. I will be out of here by the end of this month. I have two siblings not in any rush, and two that are greedy and impatient. I have been the last of 5 siblings to still remain in Hawaii, and was begged by them to move here from Maui to caretake the homestead. Hindsight says I should of stayed on Maui, and sold the place 10 years ago when my parents passed. Property value has skyrocketed from $32,000 to $1.2m over the years so I can't afford to buy them out. My new place not bad though, and I won't have to deal with family anymore after this. I get 14% all said and done. Can't afford anything here with $140,000. I'm currently thinking Georgia. I was thinking Florida until Irma hit. Any suggestions for an affordable peaceful area to spend my twilight years would be appreciated.

SW corner of Georgia is nice if you can handle the humidity in the summer. Easy to find places on the water, land prices are very reasonable. Small city attractions nearby in Albany, Ga. Tallahassee, Fl. and Dothan, Al. I used to fish Lake Seminole with a girlfriend's grandmother when I was stationed in Albany.

I love the riverfront properties near the coast but a lakefront property near Atlanta any cooler in the summer? My kid sis said Alpharetta was so nice and cool at around 60 degrees.

WOW difficult time trying to value my Arisaka. It had a ground Mum and dad had the defaced mum completely removed then the whole action reblued by his gunsmith in Tokyo I'm guessing in the late 1940s early 1950s. This was way before these rifles had any collector value. He has the matching bayonet, and the aircraft sights are intact. I'm guessing no mum, and reblue cost the value but the gun is in very nice shape. I believe it never saw action and was a home guard gun for the port of Aomori in Northern Honshu where he first landed after the surrender. Difficult to get a baseline the prices being everywhere. Even the 1903 Springfield not easy to price. My 45/70 Enfield had nothing to go by so having difficulty pricing this gun. I shall trudge on....

I'm kind of big on florida myself but then I might be a little biased and I hate cold weather in any form. FWIW Irma hit Ga. too. My friend in Atlanta was without power for several days and I got power back on before my company's office did in Valdosta.
