Usually by about week 3 the eyes are opening.
I woke this morning to a whole lotta squeakin & squawkin to fing 5 in a dog pile and the noisy culprit all by itself. Put it with the others and silence in a matter of seconds!

This is what a well fed & happy puppy looks like!

Tonight will be 1 week since birth. All pups have just about doubled in weight! Always amazes me how well Mother Nature kicks in and takes care of her own.

Yes those tails are quite fat as well, good sign they will be able to clear off a coffee table in one maybe two swipes- a trait every Lab should have!

As of last night everybody has crossed the 2# mark.
Big Sister Claro doesn't want anything to do with the puppies, afraid Mom is gonna snap & snarl at her! Aunt Dixie could care less one way or the other as she keeps her distance even though she is very curious about giving the pups a good sniff when Moms not looking!

Really making me want another puppy!!
We've been dog sitting my mom's dog while she had heart surgery/ recovery. He's a really good little dog, Dachshund-Chihuahua mix. He looks like a German Shepherd that was left in the dryer too long. :D
Anyway, he goes home today and we're still debating on the next puppy. Great Dane or Lab.
Going to be interesting for sure.

It's drunken sailor time! They have started to get up on their paws and are stumbling around, bobbin & weaving like they are on shore leave. Such fun watching the progression.

Won't be long before they start exploring. Isn't it a real joy to see the growth and change on a daily basis.
Our 10 month old Rat Terrier woke me up this morning by standing on my chest and licking my cheek. He needed to go outside. He is really becoming an adult, even if he still loves to pick on the older dogs until they chase him.

Weighed the brood this morning, approaching the 3 lbs mark. Then cleaned the box and put the kiddies back in and one kept climbing up the hog rail through the door opening- in goes the door!

Wont be long now before they start to discover everything which can be chewed. Our puppy could destroy a tennis ball per day until his puppy teeth came out. Cheaper than new furniture.

Roll of toilet paper has worked wonders for puppy teeth. Safe for them to digest and the teeth seem to really work loose while chewing it.
I do my darnedest to keep lots of toys on hand and switch them out every few days to keep them interested.

They squirm too much. Try to set them down and they move away. Then mom has to get involved-UGH!

Just realized I forgot to post a pic yesterday!

Had a bit of a scare yesterday, Winnie has been nursing less past couple days, not much concern there as the pups are gaining weight daily. The silence from the box says they are FULL! Anyhow, I noticed last night that her right side was engorged with milk( she is a left side nurser) so I gave my vet tech friend a call. She suggested hot compresses and massaging her mammaries to get milk flowing. Then get puppies on those nozzles. Low and behold all six pups took her from engorged to empty in about 20 minutes.
Before I went to bed I told her that she needed to nurse BOTH sides! At 5:45 this morning she was laying on her left side and nursing the right.

Off to the gun club to kill some invasive clay birds!

I'll try to post some pics later!

So got home from the club and I'm still asking myself 'why didn't I stay in bed' , boy did I have a bad day!
But my new truck went on its first long high way trip, mileage up to 19.5 ( or so the computer says). Almost waffled a fawn at 70 mph! Then got home to find my last Koi in the fish tank died...
Puppies made it all better though!!
And now the pic I just took won't load!

Just cleaned out the box, weighed everyone, all over the 3 lbs mark today. Quick vacuum to get all the hair cleaned up. Put fresh paper in and replaced the pups where they all commenced to peeing on the fresh paper... Never fails!
Now they are awake and barking, squeakin & squawkin up a storm!

Having pups in the place is a blast. I miss it. Not enough to go through the hassle, but enough to reminisce and to enjoy your updates. :-D Shucks, I'd forgotten what a pain ONE pup is - until we got Biscuit the wonder dog a couple years ago. Now she's settled down pretty good and I'm sleeping at night like and old man should.

yes, I am not looking forward to nightly potty trips while house breaking a pup but it's all for the best! Can't beat the joy and enthusiasm of a puppy!

It has been said that every man ( woman, person) is blessed with 1 perfect dog in their lifetime, I was fortunate enough to have had a darn near perfect dog years ago. Now I'm on the hunt for another, which pup will it be...

This morning, 0515-ish I wake to puppy noise from down stairs, Winnie and Claro are in my bed as usual. I roll outta bed' throw on some clothes and head downstairs to take the girls out. What do I find!? 4 puppies are laying on the floor OUTSIDE the box! I forgot to put in the higher door last night! ( I have 3 different door heights) So I guess I need to alter one or add a 4th.

Out with the big dogs, scramble to put puppies in the box, clean up a couple puddles- the FUN has begun!!

The fun has begun alright, it's going to be great watching how their different personalities develop..... :D

The master replied " it is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war ".

Now you get to find out just how clever they are. You know that they are escape artists, but one will be better at it than the others. Have fun as you watch them discover their world.

Clever yes that's for sure! They have figured out that when I clean the box and put them back in that they should all pee immediately upon hitting the floor!
Everyone is starting to show more personality, they are beginning to interact with each other in more playful/ dominance ways. Funny to watch these guys square off and start pushing each other around.
