Interesting info Arsenal of Democracy WWII

Post by Ben_Rumson »

At it’s peak in August 1945 the U.S. Navy was operating some 6,768 ships.Every vessel required binoculars. 23 battleships, 28 aircraft carriers, 71 escort carriers, 72 cruisers, more than 288 submarines, 377 destroyers, and thousands of patrol, amphibious, supply, and auxiliary ships. Consider there were many other classes too including 544 PT Boats, and some 82,266 landing craft built during the war! The most common issue was the 7x50. Several makers contributed, Bausch & Lomb at the top of the heap. The place I found this info just found some NIB unissued.

With computer machining of lens and modern materials, I'd opine that today's less expensive glass is a better value than the top line articles of the WWII era....

My older brother brought home a pair of those, they were in the family for many years. I agree with Blaine, they were not so hot by today's standards.

I'm quite sure Blaine is correct. But, as a piece of history a pair would be nice to set on the shelf next to my dad's shadow box with his flag, medals and ribbons.

The Esteemed Blaine G.is correct. Speaking form personal experience, the WW II G.I.binoculars are not as good as today's cheaper/economical computer designed/fabricated binoculars. The clarity, color rendition, brightness of those old lenses just is not there.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

The Japanese have a great tradition of optical glass making. The Germans were their ally in WWII and supplied them with their glass which was known to be the finest in the world. The Japanese took their cue from this and developed their optical glass making to a degree that by the 1960s Made in Japan binoculars were only bettered by Lietz & Ziese.
The joke was on us because everyone turned their nose at most things that said Made in Japan. Of course that's not the case any more. You want in on some of the old gold @ebay search vtg Tasco binoculars 7x35. Google vintage Japanese binoculars and then start searching, prices are climbing. Happy hunting

They must have specified cheap lenses for that military contract. What is better today is lens coatings which reduce flare. But old lenses, Leica, Shcneider, Nikon etc, are as sharp as anything made today.

It was standard practise in the NZ army to nick the field glasses off dead German officers.
