Savage 99 in 38-55?

Post by Poohgyrr »

A friend on another forum mentioned one of these selling before he could get it some years ago. I don't really follow 99s but recognize they're special. And the 38-55/375win speaks for themselves. I don't remember hearing much about the 99/38-55; anyone here have anything they can share about it?

No, you don't see many 1899's in 38-55, 32-40, or 25-35. It was big competition back in the day between Winchester and Savage and most gun companies hated to chamber their guns in calibers that other manufacturers seemed to have a hold on.

I have one and it shoots better than any Winchester in that caliber that I've had over the years. Even used it for elk hunting some years back about when this picture was taken. This one factory letters to 1912.----6

Back in the early 1970's I bought a beautiful Savage 1899 saddle-ring carbine in .38-55 for $110. Don't remember what happened to it, but probably traded it off for a long-forgotten Winchester. Even then, however, I had a hunch it was a rare piece and should have held onto it. But being left-handed, I detested the 99s safety set-up. Later I remember acquiring an 1899 barrel-band carbine in .250-3000, and actually carried it for a few years as my patrol rifle as a Conservation Officer. It accounted for a bunch of deer-running canines. I ended up selling it to Doug Murray who had written the definitive book on the Savage 99 rifle back in the 1980s.

Just a bunch of old guns collected, shot, and hunted with in a 44 year period.

Another pic of the 38-55 and below that is a half rd./oct 1899 made in 1902 chamber d in 30 wcf.

All early Colts .....you boys enjoy Easter....we have a big feast coming up at th inlaws. Might even drink a half dozen beers or enough until I fall down. Only two doors down. I can stumble/walk home. :D

One of my favorite and best shooting guns...1893 Marlin in 38-55. It's like new throughout but when I got it, the case color faded....must have been stored near a window. I had Turnbull recase the receiver. The ammo in the pic is wrong....

Image

A few more early Colts...the double action is a 1878/1902 military "Alaskan"

Beautiful stuff Jack. Way nicer than I could swing.

Except maybe the Moosehead. One of my old standbys. :D
That's what's in my gun room fridge now. I got no old Colt SAA's or Da's in there though. :D

Hope you have a nice Easter dinner bud. Careful walkin home haha. :D

Oh come on buddy, even an old hick like me knows you'd have never made it at that pace.
Glad you made it bro! I knew you would. :D
Happy Easter, my friend.
