Home Gunsmithing My Levergun...

Post by Ji in Hawaii »

Aloha Gentlemen. Haven't been around much because haven't had much to say especially in relation to leverguns. Still going to PT 4 days a week for my chronic back issues, and going to way to many funerals, friends and family dropping left and right, not funny at all. Anyways... I finally have something levergun related to talk about. My most used levergun was in need of some serious attention and upgrade. The sights were lousy, the butt stock way to short for my long arms, and it needed more oomph in order to reach the feral pigeons raiding my songbird feeder. The levergun I speak of is of course my Daisy model 10 BB repeater. At 30 feet It was so gutless I had to aim a foot high to reach a pigeon, and when it did hit I was lucky if the pigeon noticed it was hit. First thing I did was apply the BB alchemy recommended by the poster at this website forum: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?t ... sy.807316/
This included adding a 5/8" long copper sleeve spacer (cut from 1/2" copper pipe) to the spring guide to partially compress the plunger spring for more power. I also drilled out the inner air tube hole larger for more air volume. Compressing the spring after wards was a bear but wrapping a old tube sox around the spring made it allot more comfortable.
The model 10 standard fixed sights which left allot to be desired. I remembered I had a rear sight from a TC Contender so I tried a test fit, and curve on bottom of TC sight matched the curve of the model 10 receiver. I used 6/32" self tapping machine screws to attach the the sight. Shortest screw available was 1/2" but this was too long so after tapping the holes with the screw and backed them out then shortened them by less than half so as to clear mechanisms in the receiver.
There's an old plastic play castle in my backyard 30 feet from my back door. Previously the BBs would bounce off like bullets off Superman but this time my first shot went through both walls of the castle. SUCCESS in power department.
The higher power caused a drop in point of aim but my new adjustable TC contender rear sight took care of the zero.

Now the only problem left was the extremely short length of pull of about ten inches. I cut, shaped, sanded, and finished a new butt stock I made from a piece of 2x4x24" lumber from the lumberyard scrap bin I picked up for $2.00.
Finished product won't win a beauty contest but hey it works for me. The 14.5" LOP is great and the curved butt stays on my shoulder under full recoil while at full gallop chasing buffaloes. I'm a happy camper.

I have to sell the old homestead by the end of this year and move out. I think I'll have to thin my herd some to survive. Any suggestions on where to live comfortably on about $1400.00 a month not including rent on the continent? Somewhere where I won't find a burning cross on the front lawn the first week I'm there is preferred.

Nice job, Ji !

I'm sorry to hear that you'll have to move to the mainland, but wherever you think of moving to, I would advise you to first check to discover if you qualify for income-based and/or personal situation (veteran, handicapped, age, etc) benefits/assistance programs from the locale's state, municipality & private community organizations.

For instance:

Last year, I received a full-on weatherization (full house insulation, a new/energy-efficient reefer, new kitchen/bath exhaust fans, an insulated cellar door leading to a bulkhead, & myriad low-energy light bulbs) for the bubble (as long as I promised to not sell the house in the next 5 years), and annual heating assistance ($$$).

I also receive two different municipal tax (real estate & autos) exemptions, one each for "Vietnam Vet" & "senior citizen" status ($10K off my home evaluation, $1K off my auto evaluation) - which may/may not be available everywhere (it pays to ask).

I would presume it would take you awhile to acclimate to environment unlike your present location.

In any event, good luck !

Good report on a job well done on the Daisy.

WRT relocating - your tropical environment may be hard to replicate on the mainland, so you may have to choose between ocean, mountains, weather, etc. My guess is that cold weather is a no-no and So Cal is too expensive, so if you can do without the mountains, the Gulf coast is an option. Not having to relocate more than 40 miles in over 50 years, I am no expert, but a list of must haves and must NOT have should help.

A tip, if you choose the Gulf Coast; 86er is now in the real estate business near Corpus Christi on the coast with great fishing and a short drive for south Texas hunting. The rare hurricane and lack of tornadoes makes for boring good weather .

Ji, aloha.

Long time. Good to see your skills this way. That looks professional quality to me.

About relocating. Blows to have to leave your lifetime home, sorry about that.

A couple of considerations. Costa Rica, check it out. If you can stand the weather.

And consider a sailboat. There are plenty around, and the old classics are worth investing in.

Not suitable for your area because of the overcrowding, but the little boat I recently aquired is in the Columbia River, 240 miles upstream from the ocean, and about 250 feet above sea level. Secured berth on the Oregon side is $50/Mo with electricity included. It is very isolated, but there are larger towns with harbors both down and upstream. You can sail or motor east into the snake river and far upstream in the Columbia using locks.

You would be very isolated, compared to what you are used to. It is cattle and farm land with lots of commerce alongshore, and boats are available for sale throughout the length of the river system.

I am about to fetch my little thing and sail downstream to the ocean and around Flattery and the other capes into Puget Sound for an outfitting before departing for SE Alaska, etc. Hope this inspires your thinking.

Hi Ji -

Sorry to hear about your continued back issues. I'm "back" in PT myself for my back and neck. It's helping, though I swear the therapist is a masochist!

Great modifications on the BB gun! It's a keeper now for sure!

I'm not sure where you'd find burning crosses anywhere in the US, despite what the lamestream media says. I live in the southeast. It has one of the lowest costs of living in the US, is growing leaps and bounds, is gun-friendly, lots of jobs, low taxes, sane people - and is one of the most diverse and welcoming areas one can live. Granted, you need to be able to tolerate high heat and humidity in the summer, but you don't need to worry about bone-chilling cold in the winter.

I wasn't born in the south, but it is certainly my spiritual home, and I've almost lived here as long as I lived in Yankee country. If I can help it, I'll never move back up north.

When I've thought about moving, if I have to for work, I immediately discount any state not gun friendly. Then discount any state dominated by leftist, socialist-loving morons (a.k.a. - Democrats). Then want a place that is freedom-friendly, low taxes, and conservative. It narrows the list really darn quick!

Good luck!

Man that stinks that you have to move away from HI. Ji, I have no suggestions of where to look for housing here in the contiguous 48. But I can suggest lead BBs http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gamo-177-Cal-Ro ... Sw4CFY0sf7 Yeah they wont be as flat shooting, but they added weight will pack a lot of wallop and they seem to fly truer in my Daisy. Nice job on your Daisy been thinl\king of replacing the plastic stoks on mine. Aloha

Fine craftsmanship there Ji !!!

Keith County Nebraska is a place to consider. Lake Mcconaughy will keep you stocked with fish and recreation. The rural areas and small townships there enjoy lower taxes.

Deer hunting, prairie dog shooting and Cabelas.....Oh My!!!

Aloha Gentlemen,
Mahalo nui for the replies and well-wishes. This Daisy 10 project was mainly a time-killer between PT sessions so I wouldn't go stir-crazy. My neighbors freak out when they see me in my own backyard plinking at cans with a safe backstop. Times have changed here. My hometown used to be a farming/fishing/ranching community but now seems to have morphed into a yuppy suburb of Sandy Eggo all my kama'aina friends I grew up with moving away to outer islands or the Mainland US. This place is choked with tourists everyday. I don't know hardly anyone here anymore. The VOG too has been negatively impacting the health of my wife. Of the 4 siblings I share property rights with my one "evil" sister is demanding I sell so she can buy a villa in Turkey, and give her never employed son her home in Paris. She has every right to make those demands so time for me to leave.
Being an island boy all my life I can't be too far away from the ocean for too long. I have no problem taking the cold walking in the snow to 7-11 in Idaho in shorts, tee-shirt, and rubber slippers, the locals in McCall labeling me "Crazy Hawaiian" when I was there. Problem is my wife can't take cold too well. I have looked at real-estate along Puget Sound, the coast of Maine, and the Gulf coast from Brownsville,Texas to Naples, Florida. I have my kid sis living in Cape Coral, Florida, so the weather, and having family there has pretty much narrowed my search to that area. I also like the fact that saltwater canal front Gulf access properties are relatively affordable there so I can keep my dory and canoe, and that many properties have coconut, mango, papaya, banana, and avocado trees on them so I can feel at home. I hear the pig hunting is pretty decent too (forgive me Lucille). Not having high mountains to see or to use as landmarks while navigating offshore will take some getting used to. I'll rent for a little while here as my in-laws though in their mid 80s are still going strong, wife and I have an obligation and desire to take care of them. A move to Mainland could be sooner or later depending on their health. I should be getting about 15% of the sale of this property (about $160,000) which should hopefully provide a large down payment if not a total purchase.

Grizz: living on a sailing vessel was always a dream my Dad and I shared but I married a landlubber (though she is a dreamboat) otherwise I 'd buy a Westsail 32 and convert her to a Chinese lug rig yawl, and live happily ever after.

Mahalo nui again friends for all your encouraging comments and suggestions.

Hi Ji. We are about 60-70 mi. from the coast in the high desert of So Can. Prices here are lower than the coast. Weather is moderate, no real cold, hot summers.Nice to hear from you here. Wish you the best in your endeavors.
