Call me dubious, but...

Post by AmBraCol »

we're going to give it a try. For some time we've had the forum set to require an administrator to OK new member profiles. The rules were simple. Register, send us an email with your new username. Give us a bit (from minutes to a couple days) to get that round tuit and voilá! - a newly minted member. Well, we've got new software and the flood of spammers has apparently pretty much dried up. But we HAVE had an apparent influx of new member requests that LOOK sorta, kinda valid. But none of them have sent in a request. Call me skeptical, but it seems like if someone can't even read the stickies on a new (to them) forum to feel their way through the whole registration process, will they be able to contribute positively to the forum? I guess we'll see. Just OK'd 17 new usernames, none of which have contacted the administrator AHT leverguns.com address as instructed...

Somehow I feel like the guys how "knows" his bullet proof vest works, but really doesn't want to get shot while wearing it... yep, we'll see if current settings will keep the spammers at bay. First posts by new members have to be OK'd anyway, but still...

Just call me Nervous Nelly.

I reckon a little caution can save some bad head aches.

Paul, as you know I have zapped hundreds of spammers but the new forum does not let me use "users and groups" I just get "general error". The only spammers I zap nowadays are the spurious sounding geeks I find amongst the members list.

Thank you, sir. Don't have time right now, I'll try to remember to get in and check out your "super powers" and make sure you've got what you need. Your help in hauling out the garbage has been greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I was wondering if it was "Dubious", "Skeptical", or "Nervous Nelly"? If if makes y'all job easier, it's worth trying.

AmBraCol - I may be one of those that failed to contact the administrator. I just signed up yesterday and I don't recall seeing the requirement to contact the administrator when I was registering. I received the activation/verification email and followed that link to complete the signup. Did I overlook something?

No sir. We're redoing things and for the time being we've got semi-open registration. It's self authenticating via email, but first post must be approved by an administrator - or moderator, not clear on that myself right this moment.
