My bees got the best of me.

Post by Tycer »

Well, Mr. tough guy ain't so tough. Yesterday I had a systemic allergic response to a couple of bee stings from my honeybees. A first for me. The anaphylaxis included itching, flushing, hives, smooth muscle contractions, and hypotension. It came on quick but I was able to drive to the local clinic which is less than 2 miles from my house. Due to the hypotension I had to have a fella in the parking lot help me into the clinic. A little epinephrine, some diphenhydramine and some prednisone I felt better, although the diphenhydramine kicks my butt.

CVS has a new generic EpiPen and a coupon for $100 off making the cost 10 bucks for a pair of pens. Score.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Man, so glad you were able to get to the clinic. Hate to think what the outcome could have been if you were way out in the sticks.

My wife is a bee keeper and I keep well away from them due an allergic reaction to several hornet stings a few years back. One of her hives seems to becoming more aggressive lately. Got in her hair while she was feeding them.

Take care of yourself and those bees. America needs those buzzy little plant pollinators.

Glad you made it through all that ok.

Tycer, you were very fortunate. The next sting could produce a more severe reaction, so it's a great thing to have EpiPens on hand.
I have gotten to where I react to a yellow jacket sting much more severely than I used to, but that's a different toxin than the one in honey bee stings.
I started going into anaphylactic shock while getting a CT scan 10 years ago. Didn't know I was allergic to contrast dye. They shot me full of Benadryl on the spot. Boy it's a weird feeling.

Thanks for the heads-up, as I have 3 in my extended family that needs/use EpiPens !

I'm glad you got attention that fast, and made it through OK.

That calls for a celebration - like buying a new gun......... :D

Carry some diphenhydramine with you at all times from now on. Practice with the trainer pen until it is an automatic response. The difference between injecting yourself at the first sign of troubles and fumbling for a pen while trying to remember how to use it could be the difference between life and death. Have your Doctor keep an open prescription for either prednisone or a Medrol Dosepak so that you can start it after a reaction. Avoid salt while on mineralocorticoid steroids.

They both "help" you retain water and the combined effect can cause excess sodium retention and potassium loss and some nasty edema may follow.

AFAIC it should be easier to get Epi autoinjectors as or more easily than Nalexone (Narcan).

Just show that you are in a risk group (keep bees, run an exterminator service, work with kids, etc.) and take it home with an automatic "Good Samaritan"/Hold Harmless exemption.

You were/are allergic to the shell fish based contrast dye. I had a reaction to a shrimp dinner at the Perkins Restaurant in Greenville, PA. Although I have eaten all manner of seafood since a small child, I developed classic shellfish reaction- swelling face, lips and tongue, itching in places that never itched- palms of hands and feet. It passed after a few hours and I ate shrimp and other shellfish for the next year or so.

I picked up some shrimp jambalaya from the local grocery store hot food section. I was fine until the second helping a few hours later. Developed severe anaphylactic shock and went to the emergency room. I was admonished by the doctors there for taking so long to get there and ended up staying for over four hours until is was well enough to drive myself home.

I just wanted to add to the discussion that your body changes over the years and to not dismiss a seemingly minor incident based on past experiences. I could lead to a permanent dirt nap.
