OT Mannlicher Schoenauer ID

Post by 71fan »

I'm looking for a Mannlicher Schoenauer officianado. I saw a half-stocked sporting rifle at a LGS yesterday and was quite fascinated by it, as I had never played with one before. The gun shop didn't know the model or the caliber (yet they had it priced).

I did a bit of research and have narrowed it down to either a 1924/25 High Velocity or a 1950. There were no caliber markings or model number marks visible, but it does not look like it's ever been refinished/reblued. I believe the front claw mount was covering the marking on the front receiver ring.

It has an old Kahles in very cool claw mounts, and a two leaf rear sight, and DST. We stuck a 6.5 in the muzzle and it rattle around, while a 7mm was to snug to go all the way, so it has to be a 277 or 284 bore. The floor plate has the Steyr logo. There are matching three-digit numbers on the right side of the receiver and barrel - "779" I assume this is the serial number as I didn't see any other number that looked like a serial number.

There are only two differences between the two that I have identified from my online research - the value, and the later 1950 does not have a trap door butt. This rifle has an aftermarket rubber butt so no way to tell if it was a trapdoor butt without pulling the pad.

So...is there another way to figure out which rifle this is? Does anyone know what it is? I'm more than happy to go back and look at it for more clues.

The main reason I'm interested is because the price seems very rasonable for a 1924/25, but about average for a 1950.

Thanks for you help!!

Thanks levers! I think I have enough to go on from your PM and the links.

I finally found a picture of a 1924/25 High Velocity Rifle (on Gunboards.com) and noticed there is no side safety on the rear right side of the receiver like on the 1950 and later models. So I think I have a handle on it and can ID to one at the shop.

Thanks for the offer Tycer, but I'll pass. I learned where the caliber marking is and try to look again. Plus, depending on which rifle it ends up being, it can only be one cartridge.

I found out that 270 was only offered on 1950 or later rifles. If it's a 1924/25 it has to be a 7x64.
