A business venture question?

Post by Panzercat »

Hey all, been a while. Sadly not much happening on the lever front.
Wondering if you can humor me concerning a question.

Looking into starting a business. Integral to this business would be fee based storage of 3rd party firearms. I'm in Arizona. Not sure that matters, but hey. What sort of licensing do you think would be involved in that from a federal standpoint? Any particular class required for such a theoretical animal? Thanks in advance.

Oh, just to make this post legit, I found this on backpage- A Ruger 96/44. If you're in AZ, might be worth your time. Then again, strikes me as a bit pricey.

.

You will need a normal, Type 1 FFL for most firearms and a Class 3 FFL if you're going to be storing NFA firearms.

I was going to reply with similar information, as a friend of the family used to run a business called "The Gun Cleaners" where they would ultrasonically clean all types of guns, then lube them. Heard it started down in Texas, this local one was in Maine; not sure where else they may be now.

Not that you need/want to copy their whole business model -- but there would be many similarities. Maybe you could call someone as an "interested franchisee" and learn more?

If I recall, besides the FFL and all other typical business requirements (space, permits, HVAC, lights, phone, equipment, payroll, etc.) two of the biggest concerns AND costs were:
..(a) liability insurance and
..(b) security.

Good luck.

You need a FFL if you take possesion of someone elses firearm. You will need to record every firearm that comes and goes, serial number and owners name and address . It is not reported to the ATF , but the informaion is availble for inspection if requested.

Thanks. I didn't think it needed to be more complicated in terms of the FFL, but I wasn't sure.

Glad you brought up the insurance. My wife and I had visited the topic briefly, but I'm sure it's going to be a huge financial component now that you mention it. Security as well be it manned 24/7 or a remote setup of sorts. The amount of throughput would necessitate it one way or the other.

In any case, thanks for the responses :)

I wouldn't part with my 96/44 for $750, but I've thought about getting a second one (for a 'spare' or 'parts'), and $750 is more than I'd pay for a second one, so its probably priced about right.

I tried to find the specific statute but couldn't find it.

The bottom line is if you make money and it involves the handling of other folks guns you will need a license.

As on point. Awhile back there was an Auto body shop that also did powder coating. They were doing some gun parts and the ATF called them on it. Don't know how it played out but it's is my understanding that they stopped.
