Got a 'new' well-used Winchester 1892 44-40 (photos)

Post by KirkD »

A couple weeks back, I acquired a well-used, but nice-looking Winchester 1892 44-40 made in 1913. This past week I got to the range to try it out. I don't have a tang peep sight for it yet, so I had a hard time seeing the sights, but I am very pleased with its accuracy even when half blind. My first 5 shots were at 50 yards just to see where it hit. They all went into 1 & 3/8" with three shots making a single ragged hole. I then set up a target at 100 yards and got a 5-shot group of 2 & 3/4" even though I was shooting with very blurry sights due to no tang sight. Imagine what it will do if I can see the sights!! Here is a photo of my 'new', well-used 44-40 and my 100 yards target.

Kirk that is a very fine honest rifle. I like it! Looks like some one liked it enough to use it and take care of it also. Looking forward to hearing more about it in the future.

You done real good again Kirk. I have always said that the lines of an 1892 24 inch rifle is just really the finest looking rifle made.

Kirk looks like you need to send in a target for the monthly match with that one.

That is a very nice looking rifle, Kirk. And your eyes must be better than you think they are: that is outstanding for open sights, for an old geezer!

WOW! What a great find, a round barreled 1892 RIFLE! KirkD, you ain't all THAT blind! All it takes is putting that blurry "V" thing, evenly spaced around that blurry "post" thing, and it up against that blurry "round" thing, and pulling the trigger before it all gets out of whack! THAT takes SKILLS!

I'd hang on to that one......44's are not noted for the accuracy that 38's are. Sure looks like a "clean" rifle......used with care during its life......these rifles are sometimes not as used as you think they are......people back in the day did not have the bucks to blast away like we do....they hunted to survive and when reaching the cabin at the end of the day, it was wiped down and the cartridges counted.

Looks like a fine 1892! Most of the wear appears to be typical carry wear on the receiver, and the gun looks like it's owner took good care to not beat it up.
