New guy saying "Hi"...

Post by Skychief »

Greetings all. Been reading a lot here recently. Looked like the water was warm, so I'm jumping in. Thanks for having me.

I'm big into muzzleloading and love black powder hunting.

My lever gun interest was heightened this year as a neighbor gifted a 1970's 336 in 30/30 to me. As indiana saw fit to allow them for deer hunting this year, I took two fat does with her. I had used another 336 about 25 years ago in Wisconsin. It always kept me in venison too.

My little collection includes a Marlin Mountie, a1970's 9422, a trapper length 9422 Magnum (an fairly rare bird, I believe), a Henry Golden Boy and the 336.

I have friends bitten with the black powder bug with some 100 year old Marlins in 38/40. They are used for deer hunting strictly with black powder loads. They sure appeal to me after shooting each quite a bit. I will have a similar rifle some day.

There's just something about these leverguns.

Just wanted to introduce myself. Looks like a good bunch here.

Best regards, Skychief.

Welcome to a fine bunch of levergun folks. I have been a levergunner since I was about 14 years old. Started in black powder muzzleloading in 1968.

Welcome to the fire. This is a great place to hang out.
Can't agree more about the 38-40. It's one of my favorite cartridges.

Doing it all wrong????? I will have you know my friend that the "Skychief Special" load in a frontstuffing smoothbore is the result of thinking outside of the box! If that's wrong, I don't want to do it right. :D

It sure is hard on the critters, here and abroad, no?

Now you've piqued my curiosity! First, welcome to the forum! Next, tell us about your smoothbore load. Way back in the last century I learned to load brass shells (The technique was similar to loading a front stuffer) for a 32 gauge Boito single shot shotgun. At least, I learned how NOT to do it. At first I imitated the natives in the area and their technique for loading a small bore smooth bore shotgun. Then I learned why they were such bad shots. I never actually "mastered" the proper loading technique but did improve tremendously over the typical jute fiber over shot wad that tended to blow out into a donut shaped "pattern".
